Charlie's Story
Life
My first job after high school was at Mercy Ambulance. From there I went to Butterworth Hospital in 1963, and then to Ferguson Hospital in 1964. In 1965, while still employed at the hospital, I joined the Naval Reserves and in August of 1966 I took a two year leave of absence to go on active duty to fulfill my military obligation, serving in the United States Navy amphibious Base Little Creek, Virginia, from 1966 through 1968. Returning from my military service, I continued working at Ferguson Hospital until 1993 when we merged with Blodgett Memorial Hospital, which was great for me since my wife, a registered nurse, worked there, in surgery. Then we merged again with Butterworth Hospital a few years later, and the name was then officially changed to Spectrum Health. Luckily for me all my seniority stayed with me, during all the mergers, and I was able to retire on February 29, 2000, with more than 35 years of service. . the Gerald R. Ford International Airport, in the security department, as a Checkpoint Passenger Screening Supervisor. After the TSA took over in 2002, I did their full day of testing and afterwards was offered a full-time position with the TSA. I turned it down because they were not interested in hiring part-time people. As of 2002, I have been completely retired. It's wonderful. My wife retired from her many years as an RN operating room nurse, in 2012. We have been married since 1970 and have two grown children, a son and daughter. We have two grandsons, and two granddaughters. We also have two great grandsons, and a great granddaughter. My wife and I still enjoy cruise vacations. We started cruising in 1987. We now try to cruise at least once a year, usually in January which is our wedding anniversary month. We have only sailed on Carnival Cruise Lines, and as of January 2020, have sailed 37 times. Our last cruise was in January, 2020, where my wife and I celebrated our fiftieth wedding anniversary. .
