Charlie's Story
Military
1968 was a time in my life I thought I had to step up and contribute. I enlisted April, 1969 to be trained as an Army heavy equiment operator. I went through training and was asked until I accepted OCS training in Ft. Benning, GA. A couple more weeks of waiting was too much and I found myself in Vietnam; heading for bunkers more often than I wanted. May of 1970 I was restricted from going into a staging area for a Cambodian invasion. I walked over anyway and seen guys my age, scared and determined. A few days and they were gone. advanced recon construction occupying force that settled on a little piece of land on the outskirts of Di Linh. Home away from home for the next nine months. I left Vietnam March, 1971 after being harrassed by rockets, snipers, landmines, and the knowledge that malaria could strike anytime. I finished my time in service in Arizona. Left the Army February, 1972. 1981 I started another military vocation as a Field Artillery Surveyor. That lasted until 1999. I was getting paid for 24 years of service when I finally retired. The good outweighed the bad. I have some close friends from my time in uniform.
