charlotte's Story

After graduation from ACHS, I attended the University of Pennsylvania and entered the field of education . I taught a few years at the NJ College of Commerce, my father's school. I went on a trip to Denver, Colorado and fell in love with the West as well as falling in love. I continued teaching, first in elementary school and then at the University of Denver for a year. After marrying my first husband, a mining engineer, we moved to Nevada to a small company town of 300 on the edge of an open pit copper mine. It was a fascinating experience! I learned to appreciate the beauty of the desert, found out friends could be of any age, learned attending high school could be a privilege if one lived long distances from the nearest one, traveled the West widely and met people of diverse backgrounds. I taught in the four room schoolhouse with only one outline map of the USA as an instructional tool. The Russians put Sputnick into outer space and we began above ground atomic testing near Las Vegas, some 350 miles south. We would go up on the nearby mountain at 5 am and watch the umbrella cloud explode with the sky lighting up orange. We had no idea of any danger. Because I was a teacher in our little town and therefore a non-transcient miner, I was asked by the US Government to wear a badge to measure fallout. Each month it was exchanged for a new one and I received a letter saying everything was fine. Later people in our area were called downwind people and there was large incidence of cancers, babies with anomalies etc. I sadly became unable to have children. After divorce, I returned home to Ventnor briefly and then to Denver where I enjoyed living. I had a fun job at the Denver Jewish Community Center developing their adult program. ob was that I obtain a masters degree in Social Work and so I attended the University of Denver part time and graduated in 1965. My first job out of school was at the Boulder Mental Health Center as a psychotherapist and group therapist and so I started my second career in the field of Mental Health. I was there for l4 years and then struck out on my own into private practice. I've had the pleasure of starting several non-profit organizations and was named Colorado Social Worker of the Year one year. I ultimately met another Social Worker, Howard Krasnoff, to whom I am now married. We live in a lovely home in Boulder which is in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, about 30 miles north of Denver. We have an office in our downstairs and are still seeing a few clients in our home since the commute is so short. I love still being able to work part time and to be of help to others. I enjoy learning and recently trained in Brain Spotting, a cutting edge technique for traumas. I also began to play my cello again after 53 years and am having fun taking lessons again. Its hard to believe that I am now 81 although my right knee seems to know it ,as does my memory sometimes. My husband is now 87 and has some new health challenges, but we both try to stay young by staying involved with others. Today I had lunch with Eleanor Burch Depuy who graduated ACHS 1945 with my sister. She brought along old pictures of Atlantic City and we had a wonderful time sharing them. My warmest greetings to all of you. What fun to stay in touch!
