Chauncey Maurice's Story
Mono at age 4. Caught kissing Miriam Pearson behind her LR couch at age 6 and sent home. She later moved to Fayetteville. Diagnosed w/ low blood iron requiring periodic iron shots in my butt. OUCH! Required 6-10 people to hold me down. Dr Hooks said NO sports until I was 16. Loved baseball but not allowed to play Little League, etc. Finally, SR yr I was allowed to go out for football--wt 125 lbs. Became "team photographer"--got published in the yearbook. Went out for baseball. Too little too late! Sociology teacher-Mr. Lyles encouraged me to try out for track 10 days before the conference meet.
Won 440 yard race in :56+ and anchored 4 X 440 relay to 1st place. Loved track running/racing!!
Wondered if going to the dentist (no FL in local drinking water = lots of cavities-and shots!) had to be so painful.
Decided to go to UNC and become a dentist. Went out for freshman track. Ran :52 440 (3rd at Big Four Freshman Meet and 1 mile relay (4 X 440).
Made varsity and improved to :48++ and metaled in all 6 ACC indoor/outdoor championships in 1 mile relay.
Member of UNC school record 1 mile relay team senior year. Continued running--5-10 Ks and track.

Fast forward to 2011. Age 70. In early March USATF Masters Indoor Champs, Albuquerque, NM M70-74 800 meters 1st and 400 2nd;
in early June, National Senior Games (held every 2 yrs) , in hot Houston, TX 1st 400 and 800;
in late June, WMA(World Masters Athletics) Outdoor Championships( every 2 yrs), in hot Sacramento, CA ,800M Finals 1st Place 2:34.37 (2nd-4th were 2:36s). 12 qualified for finals and I was 8th w/ a lap to go and able to win by over 2 seconds, 400M Finals 3rd Place :65.4, and ran on the winning USA M70-74 4 X 400 relay team; and the end of July, in hot Cleveland, OH area, 800M 1st Place by almost 3 sec in 2:34++, 400 M 2nd place 1:05.5, and ran on the winning M70-74 4 X 400 relay team.
For 2011--undefeated in 800 Meter races and fastest outdoor 800 time in the world for Men 70-74, 2:34.37
My best track year ever managing training, racing, and health keeping minor injuries from becoming much worse.
I've had three knee arthroscopic surgeries and I need the right knee done again soon (will be two each knee).
Although retired, still working some as I've learned there has to be some discomfort in dentistry but it can be minimized and I continue to like the challenge, and yes, I'm a Tarheel!
