Cheri's Story
Life
I had a very fulfilling career with Prescott Unified School District and left Âon top for which IÂm grateful. Becoming certified in scuba diving has been a wonderful adventure. Through diving IÂve met many people from all over the US and the world. IÂve been involved with an organization called REEF (Reef Environmental Education Foundation), based in Florida. It recruits volunteer divers to become Âfish watchers (learning fish species and keeping notes during dives of what species are seen, along with the abundance of each). The information is logged on scan sheets and transferred to the REEF data base where it can be accessed by researchers or anyone who is interested. IÂm proud to say I have achieved the rank of Âadvanced (based on passing a test proving knowledge of 100+ species) and received a certificate for completing 100 dives for REEF. Besides diving, I like to spend time with my sisters, Denise and Tricia, and their families. My interests include photography, technology, travel, movies and my newest passion, Disneyland. IÂve been an annual passholder for the past 3 years and enjoy making trips alone, with friends, and with family. IÂve also been active in Al-Anon for over 18 years. I havenÂt worked since I retired, rather IÂve been reveling in the freedom of not having to be anywhere or do anything unless I want to! IÂm sure in time the novelty of that will diminish, but it hasnÂt happened yet! At the same time, I feel that there are other things in store for me, so I am enjoying having life unfold and watching to see where it takes me!
No kids, but I have a niece and 6 nephews: DeniseÂs 3 boys and 1 girl (all married now, ages 23-30) BenjyÂs 2 boys (single, 20 & 21) and TriciaÂs son (9). I also have 2 great nieces and 4 great nephews. BenjyÂs...Expand for more
oldest son is in the Marine reserves and recently finished a 7 month tour in Iraq. (Ben passed away Aug. 2006.) My youngest nephew has been a lot of fun since I retired; IÂve had a chance to get to know him and weÂve made a few trips to Disneyland together! Everyone thinks IÂm his grandma! Now I see why grandkids are so much fun!
In 1992 I became a certified scuba diver and as a result have been fortunate to travel to Hawaii, to several destinations in the Caribbean (Cozumel, Turks and Caicos, Honduras bay islands--Utilla, Roatan, and Guanaja, Belize, Guatemala, Tobago, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, Bonaire, Bimini) and Mexico (La Paz and Sea of Cortez). IÂve also been on 3 cruises with Tricia and Dylan so I have seen some other islands and cities that way and next May IÂm going on a two week Panama Canal cruise. IÂve been to Toronto but have yet to travel to Europe, Asia, or any other continents but hope that in the next few years IÂll be able to see some of those faraway places!
MY MOST MEMORABLE EVENTS?
1. Receiving my gold and diamond pin from PUSD for 30 years service 2. Being in the delivery room to witness the birth of one of my great nephews. 3. Cruising with Denise, Dylan and Tricia in 2004. 4.My wedding in 1971Âeven though the marriage ended, my wedding day is one of my best memories. 5.The 50th birthday party that I threw for myselfÂ100+ guests, a barbeque and a DJ. It was a blast!
Workplace
I retired Dec. 23, 2005 from Prescott Unified School District after teaching a total of 34.5 years, 3 in Rio Rico, AZ and the rest in Prescott. I taught first grade for 15 years, and was an elementary reading specialist for the last 20. Since retiring IÂve subbed a few days for the other reading teachers at my former school, but mostly have enjoyed NOT working!
