Cheryl's Story
Life
I left Medicine Hat in 1972 to visit Sharon Weishaar in Burnaby, and ended up staying for a year. Returned to the 'Hat, took various courses, had a number of jobs before settling into U of A, graduating in 1979 with a BSc in Agriculture/Range Management, specializing in Wildlife. During my tenure at University, I attending Combat Arms School/Officer Training in Quebec for 4 months. My work at the University led me to a job as Zookeeper for 3 years. I left to return to University in Honors Psych, with the idea to complete my Master's. Although accepted into the program, I chose to do something totally radical. I was moved to Lethbridge to begin a new career in sales: the first woman south of Calgary to sell Canon copiers! It was a really exciting time, my company was great! I was offered a position as an animal nutritionist, and chose to try that for awhile (all that university for ?????). ave been married 23 years and have 3 children: 2 boys (22 and 20) and one daughter (17). I also have two step-daughters who are grown. We have lived in Lethbridge for the entire time - my husband was Mayor for 15 years, and alderman for 9 years prior. He retired last year and is busy with the Workman's Compensation Board (he is a CA by profession, but retired prior to being elected mayor in 1986) as well as a number of private ventures. I am busy with the kids mostly. I actively compete in Dressage and have been completing my National Intructor Certification this past year. I have 3 horses, one of which is a 2 year old that I just imported from Germany last year. We also have 5 cats, two dogs, and a tank of fish. I completed my Masters in Neuroscience at the Canadian Center for Behavioural Neuroscience here in Lethbridge in 2006 and currently serve on the Animal Welfare Committee. I am also a "tester" for the Equine Production course through the Green Certificate Program which is run through high schools. Kids all still home and David's daughter has 3 kids now. Mom and Dad still alive and doing well in the 'Hat (Mom is 94 today!). And that's a wrap!
