Cheryl's Story

Workplace BIO for Cheryl Bates Cheryl Bates has been a music educator in Texas for over 20 years. Her public school teaching experience includes over 10 years of both elementary and secondary music in Klein and Spring ISDs where she received numerous Achievement Star Awards from the School Board and produced many award winning choirs. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in Music Theory and her Master’s and Doctoral degrees from the University of Houston in Music Education. Dr. Bates is Professor and Director of the Music Program at Lone Star College - Tomball. Previously, she has been an Adjunct Instructor at Sam Houston State University, Houston Community College, University of Houston and an Affiliate Artist at the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston. the years to the Texas Music Educators Association and the College Music Society. In June 2006, Cheryl took her college choir to NYC to perform in Carnegie Hall. Also in 2006, she was nominated by students and chosen by faculty to receive the Faculty Excellence Award from Tomball College, NHMCCD, and NISOD. In 2002 she was awarded an Innovative Project Grant from North Harris Montgomery Community College District. She also serves as an adjudicator for Regions 9 & 23 UIL music events. Her research interests include aural skills pedagogy, music teacher training, music perception/cognition. Dr. Bates was awarded a Sabbatical by Lone Star College for research for Fall 2008. She is currently serving as President of the Texas Two-Year College Choir Directors' Association. Last year Dr. Bates served as the All-State Choir Coordinator for this organization.
