Cheri's Story

Life My life over the past six years has really changed. I met and married my husband Kim. In one day I became a wife, step-mother of five, and step-grandmother of five. The sixth grandchild was born in the spring of 2004, and a seventh in the fall of 2007. All of the children and grandchildren live either in Colorado or Utah. My in-laws live in Denver and raise race horses. Kim is a non-destructive inspector for Conam. His job often takes him on the road, which means I am often left alone with my pets. When we were first married (May 31, 2003) we had one dog (Dakota) and 3 cats (Simba, Sebastian, and Ricky). Since I started working for the Animal Shelter in Seneca, we have added two dogs (Fabian and Nugget) and three cats (Kismet, Jeffrey, Romeow, Nerys, Miriam, and Faith). Unfortunately, we lost our beloved Simba on our third anniversery in 2006 to liver failure and our Siberian Husky Dakota on June 12th of 2008 to cancer. We also have a Ball Python named Reggie, a parakeet named Skye, and a rat called Harris. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in June of 2005. Since my MS diagnosis, I haven't been to interested in looking for work. My husband's work keeps us going, but sometimes things are tight. I am a full time volunteer at the Just Animals Shelter in Seneca, IL and spend unbelievable hours there. School Roberts School: My best memories of Roberts almost all have to do with Mrs. Kranz. She was my 1st grade teacher and she was the best teacher I may have had during my entire educational career. In the years I taught I tried to keep a little humor in the classroom. Okay, I only stood on my head when I was teaching P.E. classes, I told stories, but not Herman stories, and I NEVER flushed my foot in the toilet, but anyone who knows what I am talking about will never forget Dee Kranz. Lincoln School: I only attended this school for part of my third grade school year. I will never forget Mrs. O'Kraski. She made my miserable transition from a special school to a "Normal" school bearable. I will never forget the good-bye party she had for me when my family moved from Ottawa to Grand Ridge. I kept the letters she had the other third grade students write for many years. Unfortunately, they were lost in a flood years later. Grand Ridge: I have many good memories of Grand Ridge. Most have to do with Band or the fun chats I had with Mr. Nickerson during lunch recesses. He kept my mind busy by never treating me as a pest, which I am sure I was. Always following him around and talking about current political events. I also loved the time I spent with Erick Nickerson and the other boys in town when we got together to ...Expand for more
trade football cards. Trick-or-treating with Erick Nickerson and Dave Miller was great, especially going to the Nickerson's afterwards for home made pizza. Mr. Cassetto would never believe that I grew up to teach Science. I was barely a C student in his class, but I ended up loving science. Ottawa High School: The best part of Ottawa High School was being a member of the MOST (Mighty Ottawa Speech Team). Getting up at 5am to be in the parking lot by 6am for speech meets wasn't that much fun, but the actual competitions were great. You'll have to ask John Duffin how I ended up an Extemporaneous speaker, but I did, and even enjoyed the stress of that. I enjoyed being a grip in the plays, especially the time when some of the actors got uppity and said that the stage crew wasn't important to the play. It was the only time I remember the stage crew receiving flowers on closing night. College I really miss being a college student. I loved most of the classes and teachers from IVCC and WIU. Those who stand out at IVCC are Bob Mueller, Bob Schott, Dick Puetz, and the late Rick Publow (Yes, I enjoyed his class). At WIU I especially enjoyed my classes with Forrest Robinson, Dan Colvin, Dr. O'Fahrety (sp), and the late Whitey Whitehead and Al Lindsey. I was last in Macomb Earlier this month (Dec. 2004) for Dr. Whitehead's wake. I really miss the lunches I shared with Mike Kight, Dan Bednar, and Jerry Hanson. The potluck lunches every Friday were great too. We grad students ate a good lunch every Friday, didn't we guys? The two years of Grad school were the best years of my life and I really miss everyone from those days in Simkins. Workplace I am currently not working, at least not working anywhere where I receive a paycheck. I am working with a no-kill animal shelter in Seneca, Illinois, and I am the shelter's webmaster. I have been without a job since being downsized from Lostant School, where the classes were combined and teaching staff cut. Military I need to make something clear in this section. I was not in the military, I was a civilian who sometimes volunteered as a translater for the chapel with the U.S. Army in Mannheim Germany while I was studying at the University of Mannheim. I miss Frog (the catholic priest) and all the women in the Protestant Women of the Chapel. I often wonder where they all are now. Chaplain Mel Schoeder's newly adopted baby boy would be a teenager now. I also wonder if Major John Ellis returned to Chicago after retiring, since I only live a short way from the Windy City. I think the person I miss the most though is Sherry (sp) Eggleston. I bet she's a grandma now and spoiling them rotten.
