Cheryl's Story

Life I am so blessed. I have a supportive church community and friends who love me. I have three children who are growing up and who I love deeply and respect completely. I have worked for the past two years at a private school and learned much about administration. I am now looking for another job in education and am working at Sears in the meantime. School I was so humbled to be chosen class valedictorian by our principal Mr. Meyer. I regret being so busy that October when I was a freshman at the University of Alberta that I declined to make the speech, thinking he would pick someone else....., but he didn't so it appeared that we did not have a class valedictorian for my graduating year of 1978 at Jasper Place Composite High School. So many teachers inspired me....Mrs. Locke and her love of 'vah ria...bles', Mr. Worthington and his passion for music, Mr. Sjolie and his mathematical sense of humour, Biology and Chemistry with a dark haired, humble, but gifted teacher from voc ed, my friends Monica Reichel, Kathryn Horrocks, Chris Hammill and his mom and dad-Rev, Hamill, Elana Fedorak, Randi Tychsen, Tatiana Todosijczuk, Sue Poss, Patty Thompson, Gary Seminuk, Bryce Lagore, Timothy E. Edlund, Donald K. Wilson, Kim Armstrong, Randy Lonsdale, Bruce Mullen, Nicki Raymond, Denise Lymburner, Liz Doell, Cathy Holowaychuk, Lynn Ratsoy, Lori Armstrong, Ed Macdonald, Ian Armstrong, Fraser Armstrong, Judy Bradley, Barth Bradley, Mrs Bradley in the library, Mrs. Scheidiger, Miss Richelt, Mr. Von Schilling, Mrs. Von Schilling, Mr. Meyer, all the school secretaries and custodial staff, and just so many, many, other student aquaintances to name..... and other good teachers...like Mr. Orest Kinasewich or Mr. Othius who taught me how to love both Zorba the Greek and Shakespere. Tina Leino, and the gang I worked with during years and years of summer jobs with Edmonton Parks and Recreation, and the intra school people I met through the EPIC workshops and Alberta Girls' Parliament experiences. And I loved watching and cheering for friends who played volleyball, basketball, badminton and band instruments. I had so much fun in high school and being social convenor for the biggest high school in...Expand for more
the City of Edmonton was so challenging too. I remember the 'Spirit of Edmonton" button fundraising campaign...and the School Fool 'Idiot Daze' competitions....so many good times...spent with creative, energetic, inspired, alive people who were 'Sleeping Giants',and who wanted to make a difference in our world. College I have completed a Masters Degree in Education in Mathematics and Technology at UNR in May 2003. I graduated Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Lambda Theta which was an honour as I couldn't have done it without the excellent professors in the College of Education, the gifted and caring staff in the library and in the C&I office, and my intelligent peers who challenged and inspired me onwards and upwards. Really, it was a team kind of thing....and I share the honours with all these good folks. And of course with my children, Andrew, Jennifer and Matthew who gave up lots of attention while I was a little distracted doing my thesis project. My kids are the best kids and they didn't complain much about being late sometimes for scouts or sports or for me asking them to make kraft dinner yet another night when I had to go to class from 4-7pm on a weekday afternoon. The other folks to thank are my parents, Jim and Doreen Donnelly who taught me to be curious and aware of the world I live in and of the country I live in. They gave me both roots in rural Canadian soil, and a love of US and Canadian military and civilian wings- especially wings that are not afraid to travel, search or work earnestly, at peace, honesty, integrity, solid business ethics, equality, freedom and respect. They were rare kinds of people in a world that kept on changing...and though they both have guardian angel status now....I cherish what they taught me while they lived their lives here on the earth. Two others to mention are Stephen Kerr and of course the name above all names...who still leads me in the paths of peacekeeping and knowledge and love. If you have read my story and checked out my profile because we went to school together or worked together in the past, please drop me a line. I wish you all the best ....God bless and keep you now and always.... with love from, Cheryl Donnelly Kerr, M. Ed.
