Cheryl's Story
Life
Well.....for someone who thought she'd never go to college, that is what I've done for a good part of my adult life. Went to college on Art scholarships, which is maybe the only way I'd of gone to begin with. Found college easy, but wanted to explore the world. Moved to West Germany in 1974 to get away, married, had my first child there (oops!)...came home when he was only 4 weeks old. What a flight! Anyway from there I stayed home caring for my children, until I decided to go back to school. Obtained a BSN degree from Avila, worked as a nurse (still do), but also got a PhD in psychology ....trying to figure out my classmates of 1973. Kidding. Just curious about people, life, and why we do the things we do. Worked with people from all walks of life, from the most powerful to the least powerful. Have traveled to most of the states in the United States for both work and pleasure. Now live on the coast in California. I currently work at a Chinese Medicine College as the program director for the doctoral program. Love the medicine and our doctors are awesome!!! My children are scattered about the United States...well I only have 3 children, so not everywhere....1 is in California, 1 in Colorado, and one lives in Rhode Island. Two have finished college degrees (Art and Auto mechanics) and one is striving to be an actor in Hollywood. Has done some comedy and other private films: What's This Show Called? (I think)...too funny. Lots more to do in life, Hawaii, return to Europe, etc. So much in-between what I told you already.....some good and some not so good. Life is what it is and it doesn't often take a narrow path. My favorite things in life are to discover what makes people t...Expand for more
ick and to travel to new places. Anyway, hope you're having a great life!
School
My biggest crush in High School was David Evans, but I never told him. He was too cute, sweet and just an all round quality kind of guy!
Teachers who inspired me? Many who I didn't want to turn out like!!! However there were the good ones too...Art teachers: Mrs. Foster and Mr.Morris....they were the ones who talked me into going to college. Smiles...I would have never found out that I wasn't as dumb as the counselors tried to make me think I was! The lessons we learn.
College
College was awesome...the best years of my life in many ways. I was inspired by many people there, made my life long friends and learned more about differences in people's lives there than I ever learned in a book. There were students from all over the world that I met and reinforced my desire to move to California.
My mentor was Dr. Charles Sheridan, who was the best! One of the smartest people I have ever met, while also being the most caring of persons in this world. Life is good...everyone should have a person like that in their lives.
Workplace
My favorite job was at the City of Independence Health Department where we did community building activities around health improvements. It was interesting work that I did for 11 years and not one day did I ever hate going to work. Each day I knew that what I was doing was meaningful and I worked with the best team of nurses I've ever known...I was lucky to have been a part of that team.
Worst job, Torrance Memorial Hospital in California. I didn't realize that people were still that racist especially in a place with as much diversity as California has. Low Point in my life!
