Cheryl's Story

Life I live in Manteca, California, which is in the Central Valley, and only 20 minutes away from Tracy, where I have been a teacher for 28 years. For the first six years, I taught 6th Grade Core and PE, and then I taught 8 years of 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Computer Technology. Now I am in my 14th year teaching 8th Grade U.S. History with one class of Technology. I am married to a wonderful man named Andrzej Reszka who is from Poland. Life is good! I am a mother to my amazing daughter, Natalia who was born on October 2, 2007. She is the love of my life. I waited a very long time for her. I stay busy with work, being a wife, and being a mom to my beautiful daughter. She is a pre-professional dancer , and she is focusing on ballet, en pointe, and contemporary. Though she is now attending a year-round dance academy in Los Angeles, I am still very busy with that as I now travel a lot to see her perform. She will definitely have a professional dance career. She also just graduated high school passing the CAHSEE at only 15-years-old. I love to travel, read, listen to music, watch sports, hang out with my husband, daughter, mom, and friends, and just relaxing as teaching has become more grueling. School Now that I am an adult, oh how I wish I could go back and relive all of those wonderful years of elementary, junior high, and high school. Amazingly, I can remember all the way back to kindergarten at Reed Elementary School. I can still picture all of my teachers and friends and how much fun I had, especially Mr. Parks, who loved to clown around and made learning so much more interesting and fun. Then there were my junior high years at John Muir. That was another awesome experience! That is also when I was introduced to basketball. That got me started on a lifetime love for sports in general. Then of course, my high school years at Pioneer. That was the most fun I ever had! If I could go back in time, to relive any part of my life, that is the time I would go back to. A lot of friendships, playing basketball, volleyball, and softball; just having a blast! It was amazing that no matter what social status you were in, we still all got along. Those were the days, and how I miss them! College I started college right after high school at West Valley Junior College in Saratoga. At the time, I really did not know what I wanted to do. So, I ended up getting my AA in Liberal Arts, and deciding right before I graduated, I wanted to major in Radio/Television and minor in Journalism. I had it in my head that it would be great to be a sports broadcaster. I transferred to San Jose State where I got my BA in Radio/TV with a minor in Journalism. I ended up interning at KICU TV36, doing camera work and character generator for the 10 O'clock News,...Expand for more
along with a lot of other things. I also worked for KTEH 54 working on programs for them. During this time, I was also an office assistant which actually paid better than the other two jobs combined. I worked from eight in the morning until midnight with these three jobs. Unfortunately, I had to put my dream in television on hold, money and time were the issues. Later, I ended up going back to school at National University to get my teaching credential, and then I went back to the University of Phoenix to get my Masters in Technology. Now, besides teaching 7th & 8th graders Technology at the middle school level, I also teach 8th Grade U.S. History, I love teaching U.S. History. I still have dreams though to get back into broadcasting one day. Work Where do I begin? I started working when I was a senior at Pioneer at IBM in their Computer Processing Department. After I graduated, I worked for Macy's and then Kelly Services, a temp agency, while I went to college. Through Kelly Services, I worked for GE, IBM, Kaiser Hospital, and many other terrific companies. I worked as an office assistant, or executive secretary, because I had the computer skills that were needed. I also worked for Channel 36 and Channel 54 in the evenings as an intern, since my BA was in Radio/Television. I would have liked to have stayed, but the pay was not great at that time, and I was working from eight in the morning until midnight, five days a week. While working at GE though, they offered me a full-time position, in which I readily accepted. Who could turn down GE? I worked as an executive secretary, and then I moved up to Human Resources. Unfortunately, I got laid-off after four years due to them relocating to New York. That is when I decided to go back to school to become a teacher. GE paid for all of my schooling, which was part of my compensation package. After graduating in 1996, I got my first teaching job that summer at Williams Middle School, in Tracy, California, as a 6th grade Core and PE teacher. After four years of teaching 6th grade, I decided to go back to school to get my Masters in Computer Technology. Two years later, I started teaching Computer Technology as an elective to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. I taught this subject for 8 years until they got rid of the elective because of budget cuts. So, I was offered 6th to 8th Grade Core, so I chose 8th because I love U.S. History. My hope is for my students to know and understand our history, especially the U.S. Constitution, and to do their research, think for themselves, and understand how amazing the United States of America is, and though we are now in turmoil, we are still an amazing country! I will be retiring in three years, so I hope that these last years will be fulfilling.
