Cheryl's Story

I am lucky to have two home towns that I love. Being born in Telluride to Billie and Maurice Schmidt, I loved Telluride in the early years! It was the greatest place to grow up. When Mom and dad divorced, my sisters Debbie, Carolyn, and I moved to Montrose with our mom. Dad never missed a weedend of picking us up on Friday nights and taking us back to Telluride and also we would spend every summer with him. I think we were known as the Schmidt sisters that were always riding our horses. Then it was back to school in Montrose. I guess we had the best of both worlds....Montrose and Telluride. We have great memories and great friends in both towns. The San Juans are in my blood, as Mom was born in Silverton, Grandma was born in Ouray and her father came to Ophir as a child with his parents in the 1890's. y to raise our children in Montrose and it is really home. Although, I sometimes think it would be nice to be in a place with warmer weather esp. in the winter. It was nice seeing our classmates from 1970. Hope everyone keeps in touch. And although I didn't graduate from Telluride High School, Since I spend half of my life there, It too will always be home. I fly a lot since my son is a pilot for the airlines, and I always get a kick out of people when I'm flying back to montrose and all these people on the plane are so excited to get to Telluride. I always have to chuckle. Oh the stories I could tell, along with all of us that grew up there before1970. Telluride and Montrose have both grown and changed so much. I loved the old days in both towns. I see many people have moved back to Montrose. Hope to see you all some time. Cheryl
