Cheryl's Story
College
I attended Lamar Salter (formerly West La. Vo-Tech) and graduated in Business Services. I finished school on a Friday and started work on the following Monday. I worked for an insurance agency about 2 months and then began working for the State of Louisiana. I can't say enough about Ms. Housely and Mr. Dunbar, who both were instructor's there at the time. I'll never forget the time I was at a ballgame with my son and I brought my books with me to study. I remember Mr. Dunbar coming down to me during the game. He leaned over me and asked if I was trying to impress him by bringing my books with me and studying. You can imagine my shock when I looked up and saw him there. I had no idea he would be there and much less that his son played ball with my son! thoroughly enjoyed my time at school and owe so much to the instructors there.
Workplace
My goodness! Where do I begin? I've worked for State agencies since 1987. I love the work that I do. I like helping people that need assistance at a time in their lives when they have no where else to turn. It can be a very fulfilling job; it can be a very demanding job. I have functional supervision of 11 employees; with another 258 employees in our region that I have to oversee personnel work. I am also responsible for preparing and balancing a $17 million dollar budget for the region. Our region has 11 parishes, Acadia, Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Iberia, Jeff Davis, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin and Vermilion. I have over 15 years in with state employment and I'm sure I'll stay another 15 years until I can retire. Once retired, my husband and I plan to travel all over the country.
