Arthur's Story
Life
As with you, I've been busy over the years since graduation. Never married, I've focused on career; probably more than I should have. I've taught choral music in Norfolk, Virginia since 1984 on both the Middle and High School levels. This year, so far, has been a big one for me: in the fall of 2010 I received my National Certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and I conducted my first (hopefully not my only) District Chorus event.
For 15 years, 1989-2004 I performed in the professional core of the VA Symphony Chorus often as a featured soloist in the early formation of the chorus in the Classical series programs. As the chorus grew and funds became more available for out of town artists those opportunities faded, however I was often pulled in to solidify the bass section. With the Symphony Chorus I toured Europe in 1999 and 2001; and in 2004 I performed at the Breckenridge, Colorado Music Festival.
The Virginia Chorale has always had a special place in my heart. I performed with them from 1989 through the spring of 2010; twenty-one years! In the Spring of 2007, I announced my retirement from the group (so I could have a life) and then the director up and resigned! So it was back in the group again as part of the Artistic Committee to reconfigure and search for a new conductor whom we found in June of 08. With his arrival I continued on for a few more years. I would still be with them now if not for the change in rehearsal times which occurred the fall of 2010 that would conflict with the choral group I now conduct.

with the VA Opera Chorus from 1989-1999. Over the years there were a lot of operas under my belt, but I would have to say my favorite was Tales of Hoffmann. Good memories, good times, horribly little pay for the time...but a great decade.
January 1st of 2005, I retired, after 20 years, as baritone Section Leader and Assistant Conductor of the Chancel Choir of 1st Pres. Church, Norfolk. It was a joy working with the singers in the choir at all times. After the first director resigned to pursue what turned out to be a very successful career conducting a national level chorus, the quality fluctuated frequently with those that came afterward, as did the support for the traditional worship with the arrival of a new pastor. Ultimately it became very evident to me that it was time to hang up my cassock and surplice for the last time.
Since 2005 I've been affiliated with the Hampton Roads Men's Chorus; for a year and a half as Interim Director, and since the Summer of 2006 as Artistic Director. Since taking over the group, it's grown from 16 singers to 33. We produced Sing For The Cure, a cantata for SATB commissioned by the Susan G. Komen Foundation; a portion of our proceeds went to the local Komen afilliate. In the summer of 2008, we performed a commissioned work at GALA Festival in Miami, FL. Coming up on three years later we are now adding a 3rd concert to our yearly series and we are making plans to perform in Denver, CO in the summer of 2012.
I'm affiliated with MENC, ACDA, and Chorus America. I always enjoy hooking up with "old" friends...send an e-mail if you want. :-)
