Chris's Story

How do I sum up 57 years of life or even the past (nearly) 40 years since high school? I'm on myspace which tells more life- events, google myspace, go to Search and put in Chris Eason Ashby. One doesn't have to be a myspace member to peek in. I'm also on Reunion.com. I moved to L.A. in August, '74, a dream of mine since I visited friends here in the summer of '67. I married Joe Ashby (newswriter for ABC-7 for 37 years) in Feb. of '76 and we had our daughter Erin in 1980. I came here to do comedy however that was delayed by parenthood and stage fright. Erin took it up--without my prompting--and now she gives them a stand-up routine in L.A. I've worked in publishing, editing for court reporters, bounced around the ad department at the now-defunct May Co. downtown and at present, I do the hearing screens on newborns at a local hospital. If anyone had told me I'd be working in a hospital doing direct patient care, I'd have said they were out of their tiny minds. You'd be surprised how handy it is to have journalism experience in a hospital setting. Grammar and spelling are not taught in med or nursing school. Trust me. Then again, you don't call a copy editor if you need surgery or post-op care. I also have been a Senior in college for years and years but I never came up with a Plan B Major after my untoward fall from journalistic grace, so I've never graduated. equent visits to the sites in Griffith and other parks. We wouldn't be true to California if we didn't get out to the beach and I'm keen to buy a kayak and start paddling. Joe says he'll watch from the sand. He's heard about my canoeing "expertise" from Mark Hammari on the Russian River back in the '70s and doesn't quite trust me. Mark, you want to chime in on this one??? I read, listen to all types of music, quilt (I just converted one room into a "studio"), wrestle with the daily crossword (I'm good Mon-Tues-Wed, then they get tougher), hike the (easy) local trails, do laps at the Aquatic Center, watch a wide range of movies (except horror, violent or grisly stuff) poke around thrift and vintage stores, try my hand at some minor (and often odd) home improvement projects and I'm still working on The Great American Novel or at least, a series of short stories. We're owned by one elderly, grumpy cat, two hyper year-old kittens (hence the grumpiness) and for 28 years, we've cared for two rescued tortoises which were purloined by poachers and couldn't be returned to the desert. Oh and that emaciated thing I had goin' on? Those days are over. So the mouthy, skinny chick will show up at the 40-year reunion fat and sassy. When you laugh at my soon-to-be-uploaded photos--and you will--please be kind. Oh and one last thing. Will the person who borrowed my Peacoat in 1971 please return the movie ticket stubs in the right side pocket? I need to complete the Redford collection. Thank you.
