over Auburn's naming rights in 2004 when the Rebels ran off their most successful coach in 30 years, David Cutcliffe. His replacement, Ed Orgeron, is one heck of a recruiter, but he's also gone 8-22 in his three seasons to date. I'm guessing many of the same Rebels fans that got sick of attending the Independence Bowl would gladly take a trip to Shreveport next year."
"If Tommy Bowden wants a raise, he should just ask his A.D. if he thinks he's as good a coach as Mark Richt, and me, and Fulmer and Tuberville and those guys," Spurrier said. "That's the only reason I got a raise. They think I'm that good a coach."
In Spurrier's eyes, the worst Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips can do is say no.
"If (Bowden) wants a raise, he ought to go in and say, 'Am I as good a coach as all them guys?'" Spurrier said. "And then his A.D. will probably say, 'Why sure you are.' Then he'll say, 'Well, why don't you pay me like that?' And they'll probably pay him like that. Or else they'll say ... it could be the other answer, right?
"I got a raise because my bosses thought I should," Spurrier said. "It's as simple as that. He ought to go talk to his bosses. Your bosses pay you whatever they think your value is."
