Chris's Story
Life
After college I worked in law enforcement at the local, state, & federal levels for 18 years.
In 1989 I had a life-altering experience. I rafted the Grand Canyon for 23 days (280 miles....Lake Powell to Lake Meade) on a private trip of local Vail river guides. By 3 months of my return I had left the Vail Police Department. Since then I have been a Ski Instructor & River Guide in Vail, Colorado......................................................................................................
In the spring (mud season) between seasons I have windsurfed for a month for the past 13 years in S. Padre Island, Texas. In the spring of 2004 I placed 3rd. in the Men's "B" , Distance Race at the South Padre Island Windsurfing Championships!I In May 2006 & 2007, I placed 2nd. in both the Slalom & Distance races in the Formula Class. The guy ,who has beaten me the past two years lives in Corpus Cristi & windsurfs & races all the time. I don't expect to beat him, but I enjoy the races, racers banquet, & hardware ( 2nd. place trophies)......................................................................................................
In the fall during Oct./Nov. I travelled for 6 years to Mexico & Central America & for the past 6 of 7years to Southeast Asia and Nepal.
The past four years I trekked both the Annapurna Circuit (23 days) & the Everest Base Camp trek (30 days) out of Jiri - Goyko Ri - Choe La - Kala Pattar. I'm hoping to return to Nepal to trek the Langtang Valley for 15 days Nov. 08...................... 0........................
As a PADI Dive master , I like to spend time where the diving is good! I have dove the Andaman Sea off Thailand on live-a-boards for 4 years. In the spring to break up the ski season , I spend a week in March diving in Cozumel.........................................................................................
Having rafted the Grand Canyon on 23 day & 18 day trips (Nov 89 & May 98), I am always looking for a private trip that ne...Expand for more
eds an oarsman/guide. In January 2006 I bought my first raft ( I usually use company rafts) a 16' cataraft I used on a 18 day , 225 mile raft trip through the Grand Canyon Oct. 2006. Nov. 06, I spent a month in Indonesia diving & seeing the islands. I was on Java checking out the Buddhist & Hindu ruins sites near Jugja. Then I flew to Bali where I took surfing lessons on Kuta Beach. Also, I travelled to the Gilli Is. and Flores Is. to dive & see the Komodo dragons on Rinca & Komodo Is.........................................................................................I feel it is important to give back to the community & I do that by volunteering in the Vail Mountain Rescue Group. We recover Avalanche victims, search for lost hikers & hunters (during hunting season), & perform swift-water rescues on local rivers....................................................................................I just finished a 20 day Grand Canyon raft trip which began late October 2007. I rowed an 18' gear raft with 2000lbs. of food, gear & beer and one passenger 225 mi. from Lees Ferry to Diamond Creek. I had tears in my eyes as I completed last years trip thinking I might not return. It is so hard to get on a private trip! We had wonderful, warm weather for November. Since all three of us oarsmen ( our trip leader Shirley , had worked as a Grand Canyon guide for 10 years and had run the Grand 40 times) had run the Grand before, we only "scouted" 7 rapids. Last year our group scouted 14 rapids, since we had many people who had never seen the hugh rapids of the Grand Canyon. I hit a few big waves which "stood up" my 18' raft. It can be very exciting , if you don't flip over or swim....which would be a little too exciting.
This winter 09/10 was very busy and I look forward to the warm weather of summer and rafting.
I ready enjoyed seeing everyone at the 2004 class of 69 reunion! The 60s Reunion this past fall was a lot of fun though there weren't many there from the Class of 69.
