Christie's Story

Life Hi, It's been a long time since I've reconnected with anyone from good ole' RCHS. I'm looking forward to communicating with any and all of you! I attended Purdue University and graduated in Agricultural Economics, worked on my dad's farm in Arlington for a year before joining the Peace Corps. It was a great experience for me to serve the farmers in the lower Andes Mountains for a little over a year. My two year term was cut short because of a heart condition that popped up. In March 1982, I had open heart surgery for WPW which proved to be a life/death experience for me. After several months of speedy recovery, the Lord called me to serve as an elementary school teacher for missionary kids in Puerto Barrios, Guatemala. I did that for a year and for the next four years, I taught ESL to grades K-3 and 7-9 at the Lutheran spanish Christian school there. In 1987, I attended Concordia University in Chicago and in summer 1990, I graduated with a Master's in Theology & Christian Education along with a Deaconess Certification. From January 1991 - March 2006 it was my joy to serve the people of the Kingdom of Thailand through ministries of Christian outreach, human care, education, and church planting through the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod and the Concordia Welfare & Education Foundation - Thailand. Learning the Thai language, culture, and traditions has been a very enriching experience for me. Learning more of Buddhism has equipped me to better share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with persons of that belief system. The first 8 years in Thailand, my ministry focused on the development and operation of a home for sexually abused girls (ages 10 - 17), mostly from forced prostitution situations as well as rape back home in their villages. r years were also devoted to teaching Christian education to children and adults through a day care for slum children, ESL centers, and local Thai Lutheran churches all developed through our team of LCMS career missionaries, volunteers, and capable Thai staff. Today, the local staff have taken over the ownership of all of the projects and churches and the Lord continues to bless them with growth and great Thai Christian leadership. Volunteers from the US continue to play a big part in several of the projects there. In March 2006, I returned to the US to care for my mom who has spent the last year in recovery from a bout of severe illness which nearly took her life but by the grace of God has recovered. She is now 77 years old. My father went to be with Jesus on Father's Day 1986. I've missed him over the years as he was a man who loved his children immensely and who gave us our wings. Mom, too, has been a great inspiration to my life particularly in matters of the Christian faith. Mom sold the family farm in 1996 and moved closer to the church of my childhood near Indianapolis. I lived with her through May 2007. Now I live in Corpus Christi, TX and am Spiritual Care Director for Bokenkamp Children's Shelter. The kids all come from Central and South America and have been caught at the US/Mexican border. They stay at the shelter for up to 3 months while their cases are being determined. Their lives are tragic but most tragic of all is what happens to them on their journey to the US. All of my ministry is in Spanish again. Hmmm. From Spanish to Thai back to Spanish. It's challenging ministry and a very much needed one at that. As I said, I'd love to hear from any or all of you! Blessings on your day in the Lord Jesus! Dcs. Christie Nelson
