I was born and raised in California I didn't know any other children until my first day of kindergarten. Animals were, and remain, my favorite companions, with very few exceptions. In addition to my friends accumulated along the way, I still am friends with the first person I met in kindergarten, as well as my best friends from third grade and high school. I married in 1967. It lasted until 1980. I became an animal trainer, performing in trained parrot shows at Lion Country Safari and Universal Studios. I also worked in animal hospitals as an emergency nurse. I also began working with pet birds and pioneered the field of teaching people how to humanely alter parrot behavior and how to care properly for them. I began writing magazine columns on the subject in 1980 and continue doing that today. I am currently a columnist and feature writer for Bird Talk magazine.
