Christine's Story
I attended Mill Valley Grade School in Muskego from 2nd to 8th grade (1955-1961). (First grade was at Holy Apostles Catholic School in New Berlin WI). Some of the classmates I hung out with were Anne Marie Olewinski, Charlene Severson, Diana Schneider, Bernie Buske, Dennis Buetow, and Marcia Langfried. After graduation from Mill Valley, I attended Muskego High School for one year (61-62) and moved to Milpitas California where I attended Samuel Ayer High School for three years (63-65). I worked for a local Milpitas company right after graduation and delayed going to college for about a year. The company was W.R. Ames company on Dempsey Road. Over the years, I learned that many of my Ayer classmates had relatives working there. In 1966 I got married in Milpitas, CA, but delayed having children until I got some college classes started. When I did go to college, I went to Bryant and Stratton Business College and earned a degree in Accounting. I kept working at Ames Company for several years until I gave birth to two sons in 1970 and 1972. Then I stayed at home to raise them. But when money was tight, I went to work 2nd or 3rd shift at Intel in Mountain View, then Fairchild in South San Jose. Late 70's/early 80's, I had my own business at home doing sewing and alterations so that I could be the team mother for their baseball teams; den mother for their scouting etc etc. I also had time to take a few more classes at San Jose City College and Evergreen. When my first born was old enough to get a driver's, license I finished an A.A. in Computer Programming and Data Processing at Evergreen CC. In 1987 I gave up the sewing busine...Expand for more
ss and went to work for IBM in San Jose. I started as an entry level secretary at the Almaden Research Center and the Palo Alto Scientific Center, but within 3 years I transferred to the 'technical side of the house' and began working on a team that delivered action plans and part's lists to the folks in the field who were called to fix broken mainframe hardware. IBM did a lot for me by encouraging me to go back to college which I did while working full time. I earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration in 1996 and a certificate in Project Management in 1999 from George Washington University. My marriage lasted until 1999. The Bay Area got to be too expensive of a place to live so I moved myself to Tucson, AZ and continued working at IBM. My work was very challenging and I enjoyed it immensely until 2008 when I chose to retire. I live in a mobile home retirement community. My youngest son currently lives with me and was recently diagnosed with adult on-set Muscular Dystrophy. He can no longer work. I love to take cruises - been on 14 so far with friends, family, or by myself. I also love to drive. I've taken many cross country trips either with family or by myself. I've done a lot of volunteer work in the community where I live. Thanks to IBM, the computer skills I learned have helped me help a lot of other people. I've also taken up the sewing and alterations again to make a few extra bucks. Since retirement I have kept pretty busy with my hobbies of computers; machine embroidery; quilting; sewing; traveling; and genealogy. Future plans include a bit more traveling. Thanks for reading.
