Christopher's Story
Life
Sang Bass with Surfside Chorus [Barbershop] in Daytona Beach, Florida. Also Bass of the Surftones quartet likewise in Daytona Metro. Was Events Vice-Commodore of Halifax Sailing Association. Still Director, Marketing and Public Relations in Florida for Barbershop Harmony Society. Bought a house in 2009 in the nation's oldest city and became a UF/IFAS Master Gardener for St. Johns County which occupies most of my free time.
School
School daze, school daze. First it was elementary, then junior, then senior. Miami in the old days!
College
Went to Miami-Dade Community College to become an EMT in 1973. Went to become a Paramedic [EMT II] in 1975. Got run over on my motorcycle a month before graduation.
Went back to MDCC in 1980 for Fire Service Administration.
Workplace
I got outta the Navy in 1972 and went to work for Flipper and Hugo & Lolita the Killer Whales at the Miami Seaquarium. I started out in the Camera shop high-pressure selling everything that wasn't nailed down to unsuspecting tourists and then moved to my real vocation of entertainment and audio production when I became a Show Announcer. It didn't pay much but it was outdoors. That wasn't going anywhere so I went to work for Randle-Eastern Ambulance Service [which no longer exists] and became and EMT until I was run down by a 73 y/o drunk on S.W. 8th S...Expand for more
treet and 67th Avenue in 1975. After two years of recovery, I became a dispatcher and then Communications Supervisor for Metro-Dade Fire & Rescue until 1990 when I was injured on the job and retired on disability.
Military
I started college after high school but it wasn't very interesting and Viet Nam was actively killing people so I joined the Navy in 1968 and became a Communications Yeoman [my last choice]. Boot camp in San Diego, CYN School in Norfolk, first assignment at NAS Meridian, MS. I scored the highest on the test for Seaman [E-3] the base had ever had. Six months later, I made CYN3 [E-4]. Then off to Midway Island's Naval Communication Station. To advance to E-5, I had to choose Yeoman or Radioman. I became RM2. From there back to California and Coronado Amphibious Base to work Staff Radio for the Commander, Amphibious Forces Seventh Fleet [COMPHIBFORSEVENTHFLT]. We took a WestPac cruise on several ships starting with the maiden voyage of the USS Blue Ridge [the first amphibious communications command ship] which we picked up on our side of the Panama Canal and brought home. Then we transferred the flag to the USS Eldorado then the USS Dubuque and then flew back to Coronado from Okinawa. When we got back, I received the Navy Achievement Medal for Meritorious service in a combat zone. It was a fun four years.
