Christopher's Story

Life Life is going really, really well for me right now. I can not complain. I have been through some rough spots (real challenges) in my life and tackled them like a pro to acquire the knowledge I have gain today. However, I feel like the knowledge that I have acquired is worth giving back when the opportunity presents itself. I have no problem discussing points in my life where I failed at achieving something because no one has perfected and achieved all of their plans/goals the first time around. The point is to learn from your mistakes and ensure that you do make the same mistakes on a repetitive basis. Also, I feel that strength, prayer and having the ability to make the right decisions can minimize on the errors that can occur in the future. Currently, my fiancée and I are making plans for the upcoming wedding. We are planning on getting married at a gorgeous resort in Bahamas. Recently, I have had a career change and moved to Rocky Mount. Therefore, we are looking into purchasing our first home. There has been tremendous activity happening this year. Resolutions for next year include but not limited too: Marrying my partner in crime, advancing as much as possible in my career, purchasing our first home, maintaining as much of a balance as possible in my life, growing and learning on a continuous basis, staying as physically fit as possible, traveling too different places in the States and overseas, and remaining positive and disciplined. Some of my hobbies include but not limited to the following: basketball, reading, weight lifting, traveling (when I have the opportunity, and funds) and physical training. Since I am in a relationship, of course, most of my time is spent with my lady. Besides that, there is not too much more I can say about myself. School High school was some of the best years of my life. I guess the real reason why was because I had no challenging responsibilities and the course-work was extremely easy. The friends that I developed during my high school years have been a great experience and I keep in contact with some of these people today. When I arrived to Hillside I was extremely nervous because I was the new kid in the school looking young and confused. However, as time passed I started to feel very comfortable at Hillside. The teachers were great and really showed that they cared about their students. I usually try to make it to Hillside at least once every other year to check out my old teachers. My favorite teacher was Mrs. Decatur. I loved the way she interacted with the students and made us get in front of the class and play the protagonist in the novels we had to read. Mrs. Decatur's class actually gained me some popularity with the other students in my freshman English class in college. High school really prepared me for my first year of college. Basically, by my senior year I had two complete sets of friends. I started hanging with two easy-going cats that loved hanging out and having fun. I use to chase women with these cats and that made my senior year extremely interesting. My senior year was one of the best years of my life because I had friends, money in my pocket, no worries, acceptance to the college I wanted to attend and holly no responsibilities at all. Back in high school I worked at Winn-Dixie but dig this (we can all relate now), I could actually take my check and spend it all on me. I didn't have to worry about paying rent the first of the month, light bills, cable bills, phone bills, car notes, credit card payments, and any other miscellaneous bills that can occur. Life was very interesting and free at that time. I lived off of my mother. She was so happy when I became independent!!! LOL Also, music was the best during my high school years. eframe (92-96). I think that 1996 was the best year for music and a lot of new artist came out during that year. I was bumping Busta Rhymes to and from the prom. I loved the Fugees and actually watched them perform that year at the Ritz. Man, I can name a heap of cats that came out during that timeframe. When I got to A&T, we were all bumping Biggie, Tupac, Nas and Jay-Z (Can I live......). College Even though high school was extremely fun for me I was ready to graduate and go to college. I wanted to get away from Durham and experience a new city. I was young, single, thirsty, brain acute and sharpe as a tack and ready for new experiences. The same way I felt when I first arrived to high school was exactly the same way I felt when I arrived to A&T. My roommate was a cat that I graduated with from high school and a very good friend of mines today. I was engaged into a relationship with his sister back in high school and I still communicate with her today as well. They are both cool people!!! Leaving high school and entering college was a total different experience for me. That first semester I was so nervous that I almost stop attending a class on my schedule that I have registered for. It was rough on me at first because I was so homesick. However, I got out of that and fast. When I first arrived, I would go home every weekend and come back Monday morning or late Sunday night. But, I made myself get use to my new college environment by staying on the weekends. It was rough because my roommate went home every weekend. When I say every weekend he went home literally, every weekend. He didn't stay one weekend the entire time we were roommates and we roomed together our freshman and sophomore years. Dormitory living was an experience. Living on a hall full of dudes wasn't the best experience for me. These cats could become quite rowdy at times and the bathroom my sophomore year was all the way down the hall. When I first arrived, there was no co-ed visitation, but I managed to sneak chicks in and out of the room anyway. I got caught a couple of times, but do you think that would stop a young, viral college male? NO!!!!! The cafeteria food was not the best. Actually, I stop eating in the cafe dead in the middle of my sophomore year. My first job in college was Dillards in Four Seasons Towne Center. Once I started working at Dillards I changed a few things about myself. One, I changed my dress-code and started eating like a king. My perception in life started to change around my sophomore year. I lost focus there for a little while and before I recognized what was going on in my life there has been tremendous damage. I had to make a plan and quick. So, I started concentrating a little bit harder and decreasing the amount of time I was spending having fun!! However, it is extremely easy for your GPA to drop and hard as heck to raise the bar to an acceptable level. I spent the last two years in undergrad trying to make up for the mistakes I made the first three years. When I was accepted to graduate school I was given a second chance and I took full advantage of it. I made excellent grades (4.0 GPA 2 out of 4 semesters) and got a heap of working experience (co-ops and interns). I have grown significantly and that is all due to the obstacles/challenges that I experienced in college. College really matures a student coming fresh from high school. When you arrive to college you are a teenager and you leave an adult. Even though I mentioned that I wanted to turn back the clock of my college years because of my mistakes, I wouldn't do it if I could. Those mistakes made me into the man I am today and I can honestly say that I am proud of myself and the way I have turned out in life considering all the circumstances/obstacles that I have endured throughout my lifetime!!!
