While teaching at Rutgers U. and working on my thesis I was an Orthodox Christian monk and later joined a Zen community that trains homeless people, and finally moved to Istanbul where I started to study whirling dervishry (SEMA) well over 40 years old, a sport too difficult for most teenagers even.
