Christopher's Story
Thanks for stopping by!
I'll just catch you up on what's been happening since... 1978? Wow....
I went to Princeton right after graduation and partyed my way out in 3 semesters. I spent a couple of years getting sober and transferred to Northwestern, graduating in 1984 with a B.S. in chemical engineering. Along the line I got the idea of becoming a professor. I knew that I had to get a doctorate, so I went to MIT.
Within a year of starting grad school I was married. The marriage was horrible -- it'd make a movie that'd give Stephen King the dry heaves. Short version: she was fine when she wasn't psychotic, controlling, abusive, and violent. uck We separated after 4 years, and the divorce was final a year and a half later.
It took me all told almost 9 years to get my Ph.D. The job market for faculty was very tight, though, so I ended up in one post-doc position (read: temporary underpaid research staff) after another for the following 8 years. For one of them I spent a year living/working in France. That was pretty cool. While I was at Cape I wanted to spend a year in France. It happened -- just 20 years later.
The last post-doc job brought me to the San Francisco Bay Area -- the center of all weirdnes...Expand for more
s. I was actually making close to real money, I was working for an expert in my field, and I was in the land of tantra, polyamory and groovy stuff like that. I thought I was set.
Shortly after my arrival here in 1999 I caught Lyme disease. Fast forwarding: my health went to hell, I lost that job in 2001, I was delivering pizzas and collecting disability for 8 years after that. Yes, a Ph.D. pizza-hauling dude.
Now my health is a fair bit better than it was. My goal remains complete recovery; I'm about 95% there. I've done a couple of engineering consulting projects. I was a counselor at a short-term mental health residential program for a bit over a year in 2011-2012.
I'm looking to be a smart critter again for a living. I just attended a technical meeting (the American Institute of Chemical Engineers annual meeting) in November 2013. I presented at that conference for the first time since 2005. Hopefully there will be possibilities for me returning to the work world. I will be at the Cape class of '78 35th reunion this Saturday (11/16/13). It'll be the first time since 2003 I will have been back in Delaware. Look forward to see you!
Wishing you all success, joy, peace, love, and good stuff like that....
