Christopher's Story

Life I have been married to Laura Marie Fall, M.D. since April 27 1996. We have two children, Kenneth Christopher Sutton (1/1/2001--yes, the local New Year's, New Century, and New Millennium baby), and Jane Victoria Sutton (9/2/2003). We live on 1.1 acre with a bunch of cats, a malamute-black lab cross (Andromeda), about 80 chickens, 6 ducks, 2 pygmy goats, and about 30 assorted fruit trees. As for myself, I graduated Petaluma HS 1981, followed by an engineering major at SRJC, then changed major to chemistry with a physics minor upon transferring to Sonoma State University 1984. Graduated with a B.S. 1987. Started Indiana University graduate program in inorganic chemistry with a biochemistry minor in fall 1987 and, in 1992, obtained a Ph.D. in the area of boron-containing analogues of amino acids--useful in control of cholesterol, cancer, and studies of organic moieties (think chemically reactive parts) attached to the unusual boron center. I originally planned to teach chemistry at the university level and start my own academic research, so I took a post-doctoral position at Washington State University in fall 1992. There I worked on other organo-boron chemistry to further prepare for starting up my own research. I knew my teaching skills, especially lecture, needed improvement, so I took a position at the College of Southern Idaho to teach general chemistry for...Expand for more
science majors. I intended on transferring to a university once my teaching skills improved. To my major disappointment, they did not renew my teaching contract after one year, and I found out no university would hire someone let go from a 2-year school. Shortly after all of this, I met Laura and we got married a year later. On moving to Anchorage, Alaska from Twin Falls, Idaho, I obtained another teaching position at University of Alaska, Anchorage and taught there for three semesters. After budget cuts eliminated my teaching position, and my wife's work situation became impossible, we decided to leave Alaska. Laura's former work place in Twin Falls offered her her old position back with greatly increased benefits and salary, so we moved to Buhl, Idaho, where we are to this day. I decided to not pursue further teaching positions after many failed attempts to secure interviews. Since then, I've been actively involved with spelunking (cave exploration), lapidary (work with rocks), amateur astronomy (have 16" telescope with public star parties, plus training to operate the Herret observatory telescope), science fiction writing (no--still have yet to publish), raising our two children as a stay-at-home Dad, Macintosh computer stuff, farming (both egg and fruit sales), camping with family, and my Christian faith (currently attending a Foursquare church in Twin Falls).
