Chuck's Story
I was acepted as a freshman at Stetson University for the 60-61 year instead of attending my senior year at Norland, so I missed many of the events and memories of Class of '61 alumni. That said, I will attend our 50th reunion.
After typical college freshman year difficulties: deciding on a major, spending valuable study time chasing girls, and worrying about financing further tuition; I decided to take a break from formal education. I enlisted in the USMC, beginning a 20 year adventure that would include continuing college and otther life-changing experiences.
Vanderbilt U. BS(EE) 1967, MS(EE) 1968. While a freshman, I married the California girl I fell for while stationed there. Our delightful daughter arrived a year later and I was a very happy, extremely busy, father and electrical engineering student. I did much better this time around in school, graduated near the top of my class, and was authorized to remain in Nashville for graduate school. The month that I left Vanderbilt, we were blessed with a healthy baby boy.
We moved to Quantico, VA, with a 3 1/2 year old and a 3 week old infant, into an empty apartment with our furniture and pots and pans 2 weeks behind us. I remember heating baby bottles ...Expand for more
in an open tin can on the stove. These were the good times. More trainig and moves and then I settled the family in Nashville and this new "brown bar" (2nt Lt) was off to Vietnam.
Returned home to goodnews/bad news. Made it back in one piece/Wife wants divorce. Definitely a record low point in my life.
We are resilient, aren't we? A fews years later I fell for another California girl. We will be married 40 years in June '11. We have one son. When he was in 1st grade, I retired from the Marine Corps. We were the "Older Couple" at the PTA gatherings. We live in the house in Carlsbad, CA, we moved into 35 years ago.
My family is spread out. Brother in VA, sister in Miami, daughter and grandson in Sacramento, and son and 2 grandkids in San Antonio. Travel is required several times a year <g>
I worked for a seafood importer in San Diego for 20 years until they decided that they no longer required an Information Systems Manager. I'm still a computer wonk, but only work when a friend need some help. I am enjoying retired life and don't know how I ever found time to go to work, with all the other things that take up the day: read email, travel to visit kids and grandkids, work in the yard....
-Cheers
