Cindy's Story
Life
I was born in Dallas, TX in 1955, the youngest of four and the only girl. We moved to Midwest City, OK in 1959. My older brothers (Tommy, David and Mark) and I all went to Steed Elementary, Monroney Junior High and Midwest City High. I was the only one not to graduate from MCHS because I moved with my parents to Ft Worth, TX in 1970. After graduating high school in 1973, I worked and attended college part-time but didn't get a degree. My brother, Mark died in a terrible car/train accident in 1974. Like all tragedies, it has had an immeasurable impact on me and my family.
I didn't marry until 1991, then moved to Twentynine Palms, CA where my husband, who is a Church of Christ minister, was living. Our daughter, an only child and the light of our lives, was born in 1993. We moved back to Ft Worth, TX in 1995 to be close to my parents. My father passed away in 1998 after ...Expand for more
a short battle with cancer, and I'm so grateful we were living there and could spend his last years with him. We moved to Trenton, GA in 1999 and currently live in Topeka, KS, where we moved in early 2004. My mother suffered with Alzheimer's for 16 years before passing away in 2005.
I still have family in Midwest City and cherish the memories of growing up there. I loved the planes flying right over the house, and the sonic booms. We spent endless hours in the park on Midwest Blvd and lots of Saturdays at the Skytrain movie theater, at least until the Apollo Twin was built. I certainly wouldn't want to turn back the clock, but nothing thrills me more than visiting Midwest City and showing my family where I grew up, went to school, attended church, and made some terrific childhood memories. The landscape has changed in a lot of places, but it still feels kind of like going home.
