Claude's Story

Life I moved to Liberal when I was in the 6th grade and left when I was 21. I had a horrible time in High School and therefore haven't been in touch with anyone from Liberal for the past 21 years. I graduated from High School in 1980; married Lisa Taylor; had a beautiful daughter named Candus. The marriage didn't last long (we just weren't ready for marriage). I met Suzan Gokmen and knew that God had answered my prayers; we were married after dating for only 6 months and left Liberal to join the U.S. Army (we married in 1983). We traveled to Germany where we lived for 6 years traveling throughout Italy, France, Austria, and Switzerland (had a blast). Our first two children were born in Augsburg Germany. We've also lived in Virginia, Massachusetts, Texas, Oklahoma, Idaho, and Tennessee. We have 7 children (4 boys, 3 girls). My youngest girl; 8 years old now, has Downs Syndrome and is such a joy in the life of our family. I entered college in 1984 after persistent coaxing from my wife. I have been told throughout my life that I would never go to college and was convinced that I never would (couldn't afford it, and I wasn't college material. Suzie, however, had other plans and talked me into taking my first class. After years of grueling study and coursework I completed an A.A. and then spent the next 5 years, attending college at night, working to complete a B.S. in Education. A couple of years later I completed a double Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and Instructional Technology. The IT degree was something I fell into as Instructional Technology was a new program of study at that time (my cohort was actually the first to complete the Instructional Technology degree from APSU). I taught 7th grade science for a few years in Tennessee and then decided to seek employment with the Department of Defense; that is truly where my heart is. After moving a couple of times we wound up living in El Paso TX where I worked for the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery School (USAADASCH) as an instructor and course developer. In the summer of 2000 I began a Ph.D. program at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces NM. We moved to Lan...Expand for more
sing KS after being hired to work at the U.S. Command and General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. I finally finished my Ph.D. in the fall of 2005. I worked for the past 5 years at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Research projects, reading, writing, and publishing were all very satisfying. I also taught graduate level business courses and a couple of research capstone classes for MBA programs at Webster University. I was recently hired by the US Army Medical Division Center and School (AMEDD Ctr & School) to serve as their Associate Dean. I look forward to meeting this new challenge head on! I am still trying to find time to write that book -- Currently working a deal to publish my dissertation with a clearing house that requested my work...and I'm also still trying to slow down enough to enjoy life a little while my children are still young. I guess that about sums it up. Can't forget to mention the month I spent in Baghdad IRAQ (July-August 2006). My colleagues and I were assigned to assist in standing up the Iraqi Joint Staff College IJSC located at camp Al Rustamayah, located just outside of Baghdad. Their Staff College is co-located with the Iraq Military Academy IMAR and will also serve jointly as their War College. I helped educate their future instructors and establish the Intermediate Level Officer curriculum. I probably learned more from them than they learned from me. I am grateful for the experience and certainly learned a great deal about our situation in Iraq. The thing I would like to say about me is that I am currently finishing the Navy War College Course 2/3rds of the way complete (will be done in February). I completed the Command and General Staff College Course in June 2006. I am truly a life-long learner. My wife Suzan finished her Masters Degree in May 2005 in Adult Education and is currently working on her PhD in Instructional Design while simultaneously serving as Director, Standards and Evaluation for the US Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) at Fort Sam Houston Texas (She's having the time of her life!!). I'm so proud and excited for her. She is truly why I am....
