Claude Buzz's Story

I have enjoyed 66 years of living and look forward to as many more as come. I have made many friends and a few enemies. To my friends "Thanks" to my ememies "I wish things were different I hope they change". Growing up in Brentwood (birth to 12 years)1950 to 1962 was a fantastic time. Neighbors who were concerned for the well being of not only their own family but others. Children and young adults worried that they may disappoint,by their actions, not only their parents but the lady three blocks over whose husband had not returned from Korea. Walking to Tony's Grocery (corner of Linwood and Pearl)and signnig for your purchases. Halloween bags to full to carry, EB's restaurant on Main Street with car hops on skates and Eb Sistrunk with his cigar stub talking and laughing with his customers(friends)making sure that they knew he appreciated them. Moores Seafood on Pearl Street, Ms. Lowes at Woodbine and Springfield Blvd. with 5 cent ice cups, punch cards and a pinball machine known to pay off in cash. The Freezette, Brentwood Theatre, the sand dunes(no longer) across from where Gateway shopping center is. Red lacquer paint jobs on 1940 Fords with chrome initials on the dash. Unbelieveable teachers at Brentwood Elementary Ms. Jacobs, Ms. Johnson, Ms. Girley, Ms. Parks (sadly passed in my 4th. grade year)but was replaced by Stan Jordon, Jordon again for 5th.,Paul Agner for 6th. and Tuffy Thompson, Dewey Britt and Ms. McQueen for 7th. Now that was an All Star line up. I left Brentwood in June of 1963, most of my friends went to Kirby and then Jackson I went to the "NORTHSIDE" and Ribault. 1963-1968 left only happy memories (maybe a busted heart or two)for me. Surfing dominated most of the years and set a love of the ocean. Early mornings at the North Jetty area, Access 5, Flagler Pier, Patrick Air Force base, Coco, Melbourne, Shark Pit and other spots with good friends. Dances always on Wednesday nights at Southside Womans Club, Friday nights at Riverside Womans Club and Beaches Coliseum on Saturday night. Bands like The Soul Covered Brass, Mouse the Boys and Brass, The Tropics, Procter Amusement Company, Illusions and many more. I had a 57 Chevy stationwagon we would put 6 or 7 friends in it and head to a dance. I got to see the Beatles in 1964 at the Gator Bowl and later on Roy Orbinson, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Turtles and finally the Jimi Hendrix Experience (opened for the Monkies) at the Coliseum, I loved the years at Ribault Senior High all the good times even the few bad times like losing accreditation, a few deaths and taking a stand that was good for character building but bad at the time for me. I liked 1st. year Latin class although I had no freaking idea what I was doing or why I was there. I cherish the lonesome, isolated, anxious, quesy, glorious feeling of standing on the dar...Expand for more
k corner of Ribault's track waiting for an express train to hand me a baton. Knowing what was on the line and how quickly it could be messed up still gives me the willies. By the way Thanks Charlie, Chip and David for running with a sophmore. We came close to the gold didn't we. We graduated on my birthday. What a gift! 1968-69 Was Florida Junior College and prep for the University of Florida. 1970-72 Was spent at the UF. 1972-74 Was spent off and on at UNF and Saint Lukes Hospital. 1974-84 Was spent traveling around seeing the things I had read about in school. Becomeing a scuba instructor, having a boat or two, running with a survival team (got to nationals 3 years in a row and came close to the whole nine yards in Canada), Skeet and pistol shooting with the NRA,Foosball,Waterskiing, motorcycles and in the company of so many incredible close friends and for this I thank the LORD every day. I will never understand why HE allowed me this grace. Lost Dad in 75. He called said "I don' feel good'. I went to he house picked him up to place him on strecther for the emergency responders, half way down the hall he had massive heart attack was gone before I could put him down. He was loved by many And I am proud to be his son. 1988- got married THANK YOU ELAINE!(my wife) SHELLEY(my daughter) CHARLIE (my son) 1993-98 Wife went down with a Brain Aneurysm. 16 days full life support. six month coma, 2 1/2 years from a fetal position to a functioning human being who still loves me(some people never learn). GOD IS GOOD! Lost mom in 95. At 85 years of age she drove herself (alone) up to a family member's estate on top of Rock Castle Mountain in Virgina (right outside of Tuggles Gap (pop: 15) off the BlueRidge Highway to celebrate Thanksgiving & her birthday with them. I had to work, but was so happy for her to do this. It is so beautiful there (I posted a picture or two in MY PHOTOS) looking out over the valley from 2800 feet up. Right after Thanksgiving she said "I don't feel good". I flew into Blacksburg Va. the next morning at 10:00 & got to her hospital bedside. She took my hand and rubbed the back of it with her thumb (this was a gesture many of her students and all of her family and friends would recognize) told me everything was going to be OK. and that now she would take the pain medication she had been refusing. She had waited for me to make sure I knew everthing was going to be OK. 1998-now Closed the family business. Working with a medical supply company. Children are on their own (Pride). Grandson in 2010 (named after me) was a milestone, Granddaughter in 2012. Have lost several life long friends lately, the last Lamar Smith (my college roommate and friend for over 40 years) hurts badly. Message to several others "Please after me". For now ELAINE AND I ARE CRUSING THROUGH LIFE ON A HARLEY. Come join us.
