July 2009: How to summarize 40 years since high school? Let's see: Drew straws, went to a small college in Ctl PA instead of UConn or the urban George Washington. After graduating debt-free but also penniless and carless, returned to CT, could not afford cost of living. Moved back to Ctl PA. Reality of small town/rural culture a shock but have survived. Worked passionately in educational programming for gifted and talented for nearly 30 years when suddenly this February, our Governor axed my programs because he needed more money to test kids to death and build casinos. Alumni like Kevin Bacon, Zach Quinto and writer Alice Sebold came out swinging, letters from thousands of others stacked to ceilings but Gov. not interested. free-lance book reviewer/writer since 1976. It must be that I love deadlines because it's not for big money. Married college classmate, sorry we forgot to have kids but all our friends remembered and there's enough love to go around. Live in historic district in 130-year-old house that always needs something done. You haven't lived (or breathed) until you attempt horse hair plaster repair, let me tell you. Our neighbor is also a Staples HS grad. He and his wife marshaled our neighborhood association; together we worry about shepherding the alley's feral cats, mitigating the floodplain, developing pocket parks and protecting the neighborhood against destructive college parties and absentee landlords. Progress being made. The town is charming and sits along a scenic river which we canoe. Country roads make great bikeways. Weather and schedule permitting, I ride my bike to work, which is a treat. Yoga smoothes out life's bumps.
