Claudia's Story

Most people from my schools probably won't remember me because I was a timid, quiet girl and didn't want any attention. Until I turned 18, I pretty much did what my parents expected of me without question. In elementary school, I was so shy I prayed that the teachers would never, ever call on me for anything. In junior high school, I played violin in the orchestra, went to Rainbow Girl activities and mostly spent every Sunday and Wednesday evening at my church. The MYF group and choir were the things I enjoyed most at Riverside Park Methodist Church. Summer camp at Leesburg was always the best Summer activity, so in my second year at Florida Southern, I was a camp counselor. That was a banner year for me. Caring for a cabin of jr. high girls meant a lot and I learned so much from them. I also had a wonderful camp b'friend so it was the Summer of Love! I guess I never thought I would get old, much less turn 66, and actually be healthy, happy and living it up in Hawaii! I always wanted to be a mom when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right. I take a walk or do research on my family tree to relax. My father's mother, Leta Knight, was the biggest influence in my life and she is my hero! Because of her, I became a born-agin Christian. I've lived all over Florida, in Northern Quebec, Columbia, MO, and Honolulu. I have learned that I did many things right because all three are wonderful people! I was their firs...Expand for more
t teacher and motivator before the world took over and I'm thankful that I invested so much time and energy on their behalf. Being a stay-at-home Mom paid off for me.(my Social Security check isn't very large, however) I lived in the Phi Mu house and was a pledge my sophomore year. I'm already truly happy and content with my life, so I can't think of anything better. My current age is 66. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be ancient. I was so completely wrong. I think my first crush, Johh, from 5th grade is now a lawyer in California. Oh, how I loved that cute boy!! I share my home with my 2 kitties, which I find comforting and so much fun. If a do-over were possible, I would have studied more and partied less in college. Miriam was my college roommate for 3 years and we are still best friends. She's like a sister to me and a totally good person who cares about the most important things in life. My first job was at Thom Neil GMC Trucks, where I got paid $1.50 an hour to be a clerk-typist. What I remember most about it is how much sexual harrassment there was on the job that men got away with in 1961. I will never forget watching out the window as a delivery truck unloaded my first bicycle, a 10th birthday gift from my aunt and uncle in another city. I was amazed and thrilled to get that bike and rode it for years! I always wanted to be a Mom when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right.
