Clyde's Story
Life
I graduated from Alice High School -- home of the fightin' 'yotes -- in 1974. I ended up going to Texas A&I University (1974-77) (now Texas A&M Kingsville) without little thought of what I was going to do other than follow my then girlfriend (Margot) to college. Unfortunately, that didn't last, because she dropped out of college, while I reverted to being an honors student. I majored in political science, but also took a lot of economics, philosophy, and history.
Fortunately, a professor (Kent Brudney) at Texas A&I steered me into graduate school at UCLA (1977-84), where I received a Ph.D. in political science, but I also studied political economy, philosophy, and sociology. After returning to Texas for 3 years as a visiting assistant professor at UT San Antonio (1984-1986) and Texas A&M University College Station (1986-1987), I moved to Massachusetts to accept a job as a professor at the University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth. In 2014, I accepted a new position as Chair of the Political Science Department at UT Rio Grande Valley. I was dismissed as Chair on August 31, 2023 because I called the Provost's staff morons and useless drones (which is factually accurate). Franky, the entire administration is just an organized crime syndicate. I am still a full professor at UTRGV and continue to fight the good fight.
I spend a lot of time writing books and teach graduate courses in political theory and public policy. I also do a lot of consulting with state and local governments and private businesses on gambling policy. My main area of interest is gambling policy, particularly the casino industry. I am now a partner and general manager in a consulting c...Expand for more
ompany that specializes in economic development and casino gaming and that company is doing quite well.
Along the way, I've been married and divorced -- no kids -- and life is excellent. It really does get better with age thank goodness. I still love to travel (especially to Europe and South America) and I still like to fish and ride my motorcycle. I have taught in Germany, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. I recently bought a condo in Rio de Janeiro, which is my wife's home town. I now spend about 4 months per year in Rio, but if Trump is re-elected President I plan to move there permanently.
I have accepted a job at the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley so I will soon be moving to McAllen or somewhere in the Valley. I can hardly wait to get out of this snow and cold weather.
I still like heavy metal, but over the years I've developed a taste for industrial music, techno, goth, trance, and various forms of pop goth (e.g. Porcelain Black is one of my favorite artists these days).
Most of all, I enjoy my motorcycle. I got rid of it when I moved to Massachusetts, because it would sit in the garage 8 months of the year. However, I finally broke down and bought a Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 in March of 2009 (Obama is paying the sales and excise taxes for me so I'll get my share of that $2.7 trillion stimulus package).
I rarely here from any of my old friends, except for Rick, who went fishing with me in Maine two years ago.
I let my membership lapse so I haven't checked classmates.com in years, but I'm back.....In fact, I just accepted a job at University of Texas - Pan American (now Rio Grande Valley) so I will be back in South Texas late summer of 2014.
