Clyde's Story

After high school, I found myself wandering around the local area. Not having a particular direction at the time, I decided to join the U.S. Army, and as they say, see the world. The first stop in the military was Fort Polk, La (Tiger Land), for Basic Training. For those of you who went into the military around that time, I think no additional explanation is needed in this category. Upon completion of Basic, I was shipped off to Advanced Individual Training (AIT). The Army trained me to be a Wheel Vehicle Mechanic (63B20), Track Vehicle Mechanic (63C20), and a Vehicle Recovery Specialist (63F20). My first permanent duty assignment was in the Republic Of South Korea (ROK)- Camp Howard, 38th Arty Bde, ACCDP #1. A few months after arriving at Camp Howard, I was re-assigned to Taegu City (Palgongsan Mountain Radar Site) becasue the only mechanic on the mountain...Expand for more
at the time volunteered for duty in Vietnam. Palgongsan, was a combined military operational compound. There was a few U.S. Air Force persons (18 of them), and a few U.S. Army types (14 of us). The ROK Army & Air Force personnel consisted of 27 total. To my great surprise, I found that the Army's "Motor Pool" had just 2 trucks. One was a 2 1/2 ton Cargo (duece and a half), that had bad brakes, bad transmission, and one of the rear axles was missing. The other vehicle was a beat up old jeep that didn't any rear drive shafts - front wheel drive only. It took me almost a month to get both of them road worthy. Because of my going to extra mile to the trucks up and running, I was rewarded with a new re-assignment to HQ & HQ Btry, 38th Arty BDE Hqrs, Osan Air Base. Compared to the conditions on Palgonson, Osan was heaven. Later the story contines............

Way back in nineteen something, I saw this pretty dark skinned girl step off the bus at Inverness Elementary School. I said to myself......................Well I have forgotten the words. Anyway, Merry Christmas
Shon Willis, my Grand-Nephew. He's gonna be a mixture Vida Blue, J.R. Richards, and Bob Gibson, y'all. That look on his face is saying: "How dare you bring a bat in my presence--rookie"
