Colin's Story

WORKING LIFE: After (finally) graduating from college (American University, Washington, DC, majoring in public administration) and serving 2 years in the military, I returned to Rochester to work for Regional Transit for 4 years. I was the guy that invented the "Park &* Ride system in and around Rochester, as well as the dial-a-bus that operates (operated?) in Greece and Batavia. After Rochester, I moved to the Maryland suburbs of Washington, continuing to work as a transit planner. I eventually moved to the major transit provider in the national capital region (Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority) working in various financial management positions. By the late 1990's, I was in a senior managerial role in the construction department, retiring as the de facto financial manager for the completion of the Metrorail system. Also interesting was trying to help the contractors do their job in a way that would help WMATA build the system. I was also directly involving in authorizing pay the contractors. Thus, I go to hold checks valuing up to $20 million. As we neared completion, I also became the senior utility engineer, close-out manager, liaison to the GAO, labor relations, etc. As the grant and capital programming "expert," I also developed close relations with our transit police. During this period I worked a trade with WMATA's personnel office to get a slot in a major OSHA training program. My half of the bargain was to assist them in their first sexual harassment training film. For reasons that I don't understand, I was acting the role of the prototype sexual harasser. Little did I know that several months later the video was to be shown first to senior executive management. My very new boss (an attractive woman) would see me in that role within an hour of telling me that we would be spending many hours together in the evenings and weekends bringing her up to speed on our financial status. Immediately after seeing the film, she cancelled her request. On our day of infamy, September 11, 2001, I worked assisting Metrorail passengers trying to get out of the city. My son Joel, who was working for the US Attorney for DC was in a building a couple blocks away protected by US marshals heavily armed with machine guns and assault rifles. I spent the next few days working my normal hours in the offices, but also working in our system with the transit police. Since the Pentagon was still burning, I usually returned to the office reeking of burning stuff. I retired the first time for a short period, then was called back to act as the financial manager (part-time) of the rapidly growing transit police. It didn't take long to prove that they needed to hire someone full-time, as I was also acting as the grant manager and grant finder. In the meantime, the Feds tried to hire me. I retired again, and got a new hip.. That 2nd retirement lasted 2 years when the then new Department of Homeland Security recruited me to a new transit security grant manager job. It was an amazing job for 3+ years, but the bureaucracy became too deadening so I retired a last time. During this period, I worked to connect grants with the science behind the equipment governments were buying. I lead two international conferences on standards,...Expand for more
plus a national program as well. Immediately after retiring, I did some volunteer work with the National Institute of Science & Technology (formerly the Bureau of Standards) trying to advance the technology. PERSONAL LIFE: I re-married in 1981, gaining 4 teenage step-kids to add to my own biological 3. Our household then started to grow as the kids gradually found mates and started to reproduce (or vice versa). So far, we have 20 grandchildren, ranging in age from 32 to 3. Our oldest is an architect now specializing in "Green Architecture." Sort of semi-retired, he splits his tie between Toronto and New Zealand. He's got 3 sons, only 1 of whom is still in college, working his PhD. Second oldest is a PhD is also semi-retired. One of his 2 kids works as a consultant in Arlington, VA; the other is American Univ. in DC. Third oldest is a tenured professor in cognitive psychology at UNC Wilmington, and has 2 young kids. He son starts college Fall 2020, and his daughter is well into her 2nd year at UNCW in math and science, though she's just starting her junior year in HS. Fourth oldest (and the only girl) is a best-selling author of e-books. She has 4 kids. Her former husband is a retired US Army doctor and bird colonel, now in practice in West University. Her oldest is an associate prof at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Her 2nd oldest is a professional mathematician. Her 2 youngest kids are in small colleges. My oldest biological son (born at Strong Memorial) is a senior manager for the US Department of Justice here in Washington. He has 3 kids, the oldest is a lawyer in Baltimore. His daughter is finishing her masters at Temple University, but is also in the US Army Reserves. His youngest is at Univ. of South Carolina. Kid #6 is now married. He's a CPA & forensic accountant in NYC. His 2 daughters are the youngest Our youngest has a problem getting out of elementary school. He was appointed principal of a school several years ago. Two of his kids are in college, the other 2 in HS. POST-RETIREMENT LIFE In June 2012, we traveled to Israel where I officiated and helped to celebrate the bar mitzvahs of two of the grandsons. When we returned in early July, we washed the clothes, did the mail, then left for a trip thru the Aegean and Adriatic, followed by a trip to Budapest, Prague, Warsaw, and Amsterdam before boarding a ship to bring us back home via the sub-Arctic areas of Norway, northern Scotland, Faraoe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia. We've also cruised around the world, across the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, as well as trips into both the Arctic and Southern Oceans. We've also cruised in the Caribbean, the entire length of the Mediterranean, the Baltic, to Antarctica, around the North Cape of Norway, and to Alaska. We're continued our travels throughout New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and now a total of over 90 countries. We've visited points in China, India, Russia, and throughout Eastern and Central Europe. We've made some trips to Israel in recent years, hoping to go back next year. For those who remember Phil Luxemburg: he eventually married my younger cousin Donna, also a graduate of MHS. Unfortunately, Phil died in 2010. Are we having a reunion soon?
