Caleigh (Colin)'s Story

Caleigh Fisher at Y! or on Face book. I don't have paid membership anymore so email me. :) The early years: I was born in East York but was soon taken off to Ghana for a couple of years while my Dad taught other teachers how to teach. During that time my Dad and Mom realized that their marriage wasn't working so as soon as we got back they petitioned for divorce which was quite a big thing in the mid 60's. My Mom knew that she wasn't up to looking after 2 boys as a single mother so we lived with our Dad from then on and visited her every other weekend. We lived in Scarborough on White Abbey Place and though I don't even remember the name of my first public school I do remember the name of our next door neighbors. They were the Brennans and they helped my Dad out alot with taking care of Martin and I. My Dad was a single parent and because of his hours we were pretty much on our own between 3pm and 6pm weekdays. When my Dad found a new partner and married we moved to North York where I started attending Brookbanks P.S. I loved that house on Tanburn Place. I loved that neighborhood. I loved the school. I loved my friends.I loved that there used to be open streams with frogs and stuff in them when I was growing up. During that time I ended up hanging out with a crew of other kids my same age who lived on or around Tanburn Place. Eric Ireland, Dave Morton, Glenn Regher, Jeff Webster and Greg Martin were the main group. We had a great time. As we go to Jr. High and High School we used to do alot of partying in the ravine down behind Greg's house. I went to Donview Heights Jr. High with these guys and then went on to Victoria Park S.S. but only for 2 years. Dave Morton and I had sort of a run in with the vice principal after a school trip to NYC with the rest of the art students. Dave and I were accused of some stuff which we did not do. I think they were only going to reprimand us or maybe suspend us but I was so ticked off that we were being falsely accused tha...Expand for more
t I left Vic Park at the end of that school year and began attending A.I.S.P (Alternative Independent Study Program). At A.I.S.P. I was basically taken out of my "straight" middle class world and was introduced to liberal bohemia. One of the teachers there, Roger Spalding, was openly gay and worked for the quite political gay newspaper "The Body Politic". We had live nude models for art classes and we were allowed to create our own schedule as long as we kept up with readings and assignments. The only down side was that they didn't really have much in the way of a science program (which was my main interest at the time) so I ended up gravitating to the ceramics studio (Jurgen Summerer) and the electronic music studio (Anne Southam). Those were pretty much the only two classes I attended. It was at A.I.S.P. that I met sort of my new crew Michael Caplan, Scott Barnoff, Nathan Berman, David Michaelides, Rochelle Hosten among them, as well as the incredible person that I would share the next almost ten (10!) years of my life with Rachel MacHenry. Google her, she is amazing. After not really graduating from A.I.S.P. I moved out of my house and moved in for a while with Scott. I didn't go back to school until quite a few years later when I finessed my way into the Unviersity of Toronto where I did 2 years double majoring in Anthropology and Biology. Organized academics and I have never really worked well together though so I didn't end up finishing my degree. I only have 322 characters left so, I worked at RPM nightclub for a while and then started working with children doing art and ended up spending 14 years at Spiral Garden an arts based rehabilitation program in Toronto. I was there until I was asked to leave because of my gender presentation. Though of course they deny this reason. Right now I'm the general (read only) manager of a great little restaurant/bar in Brooklyn N.Y. I live with my partner of 8 years, Allison, and am still composing music as my main hobby.
