Colleen's Story
Life
Life has been very good to me. I have a great family, good friends, and I was able to experience the adventure of a lifetime thanks to the US government. I've been a teacher for 13 years, and most of those years have been spent working with schools closely affiliated with the US military. After eight years near Ft. Hood, Texas, I took a Dept. of Defense job teaching gifted children in Italy just south of Rome. In 2005 I returned to the US as a coordinator of gifted programs for a small district in central Ohio. I enjoy doing things with my friends and alone including going to dinner or movies, traveling, and scrapbooking. I finally own a home of my own in Columbus, but I love to travel back to Europe and other places in the US for fun. When I am still in town, I spend time with my family in Twinsburg, especially my twin niece and nephew, who keep me entertained. The rest of my "spare" time is spent working toward my PhD in Clinical Psychology.
College
I graduated with a BS in Education from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio in 1994. I went back to school for my Masters in Special Eduction - Gifted graduating from the University of North Texas in 2002. In 2005 I completed my second Master's degree, this time in Educational Administration from the University of Nebraska. I am about a year and a half into my final degree, and I hope to have completed my doctoral degree in ...Expand for more
Clinical Psychology by the summer of 2010.
Workplace
My entire professional career has been spent in the education field. I taught in Killeen, Texas for eight years, mostly as a first grade teacher. In 2002, I moved to Italy to work as a gifted education teacher at a naval base with the Department of Defense. In 2005, I returned to the United States to work as a gifted program coordinator and enrichment specialist for a small district in Delaware County. I currently oversee the gifted programs for three districts in Licking County. Long term, I would like to go into private practice assessing and counseling gifted children and possibly teaching classes on gifted education to pre-service or graduate teachers.
Military
I was not a member of the armed forces, but for 11 years I worked as a teacher in schools closely aligned with the military. The first 8 years of my career, I taught in off-base schools serving Fort Hood, Texas. It was then that I first came to appreciate the sacrifices our military members and their families make to serve our country. I then worked in the Department of Defense Schools for 3 years overseas, during which time I was fully integrated into the base community. I loved that time getting to know the families who serve us and getting to taste military life just a bit. To all our military members and their families, thank you for all you do for our country!
