Coreen's Story

MyStory My parents were Harlow and Ruth Buchanan and they had 5- children, (in order) James, Louise, Harold, Coreen and Henry. They were great parents. We camped out a lot tn the mountains and at the beach. We were able to bring friends with us when we went places like camping or Disneyland. We always had at least one dog sometimes more and usally a few cats. We had a big garden, usually chickens .sometimes pigs, goats and/or cows. I remember having a donkey named Jenny and boarding horses when we lived in San Gabriel, also we raised rabbits there. So there was always plenty of work to do for all of us & we all had chores. Every year we had to haul rocks out of the garden area & we would moan & groan about it but fat lot of good it did to whine, just stick to it till its done.!! We always had a good garden though, and dad would take all the neighbors some of the produce. I always appreciated that my parents would ask us if we did a certain thing or not instead of just yelling at us for doing it when maybe we hadn't. If an adult was mad at us or yelling at us although we could walk away we weren't suppose to talk back or be rude, but when we would tell our folks what happened then they would go talk to them and usually they wouldn't be mad at us for whatever it was. My mother would show us how to make toys out of spools, popsycle sticks, rubber bands and really almost anything. We would make little paddle wheel boats and float them, kites, rubberband guns, whistles, and be proud to show them off. I really feel that I was so lucky to grow up in my family. I always knew I was loved & that I was valued as a person. My first school was Lark Ellen Elementry in Covina. I had snack almost every day with Jesse ( I don't remember his last name) he was very nice though. We lived on Azusa Canyon Road in Irwindale. The next year we moved to Heintz St. in BP,so 1st & 2nd grade was at Geddes Elementry. The avacado grove at the end of the street got torn out and our new school went in, Plesant View Elementry. 3rd gade was Mrs Webb, 4th grade was Mr Herman, 5th grade was Mr Scribner and although I had my mind made up early not to like him, he turned out to be my all time favorite teacher. He had heart,& he really cared about his students. 6th grade was Mr Juden . Summer between 6th and 7th we moved to Estella St.and I attended Landis Jr.High. 7th grade homeroom was Mrs Ward, 8th was Mr Weintrub. I worked in the office in 8th grade. Then came 9th and 10th at BPHS. My favorite teacher there was Mr Kholer for Latin . I had my son in July of 1965 his name was Stephen, but mostly went by Steve. The following year my family moved to Chino and I went to MT SAC and got my GED. I also took some electronics classes with a trade school. My 1st job that had nothing to do with family or friends was at Central-Lab in El Monte. I was sharing an apartment and taking the bus to work . What fun!! It didn't last long, lay-offs occurred, and although I lasted a little longer than those hired on with me ( I was a ...Expand for more
hard worker) so I went from diode fabrcation to Quality control to shipping and receiving, to soldiering, then my time ran out. LOL I lived at home with my folks till Steve was out of kindergarten. I worked at a store in town called Value Fair. Then I was living in the LA area for a few years. I first worked at Nudie's Rodeo Tailors, he made clothing, boots & costumes for alot of the country western entertainers & actors. Then I worked for Fleetwood Electronics training. After my oldest brother died then I moved to Pipes Canyon ( in the high desert, the back road to Big Bear) by my folks for a year. Then back to the Pomona area. I would take a few classes at MT SAC every now and then but not for credits just to know. Mostly I either worked in electronics or as a waitress.I worked at Bob's Big Boy on Holt. Steve had leg perthies so he wore braces on his legs for 3 years and had surgery to correct it when he was 10.It was sucessful and we were happy to say goodbye to the braces. He loved swimming, horseback riding, ice skating, fishing, reading and all animals. After his surgery we moved to Texas & I got married the next January. My hasband was a merchant marine and working for Exxon. He would be on the ship for 90 days then off for 60 so we did alot of camping ,fishing and traveling. We moved to Colorado near my sister. My husband was tired of being away so much so he transfered to the minerals division of Exxon . We moved to Glenrock, Wyoming and he started driving heavy equiptment for a strip mine. Eventually we built a cabin and lived there for about 5 years. The Mine closed so back to hang out with my family for awhile in California then we moved to Texas again by his family. Steve died in 1982, an accident. My dad died in 1985. I became one of Jehovah's witnesses in 1986. I came back to California in Nov. 1987 to help my mom. Got a job at Dennys for 6 months then worked for the Calif Dept of Food and Agriculture for 2 years.Got divorced in 1990. Started a cleaning service the same year.1992 started regular Pioneering, (donating 90 hours a month teaching others the Bible.) In 1994 my mom came to live with me and I stopped being a Pioneer the following year. In 1997 we bought a house together. Mom was still crocheting up a storm, It seems like she made at least a blanket every couple of weeks sometimes even more, always busy.1998 started working for Chino School district, so I could spend more time with mom. We had a book (Bible) study at our home for about 10 years. Mom died in 2005 at 87. Besides being Steve's mom living with & taking care of my mom in her later years were the two most rewarding and enjoyable things I ever did. I've been busy & happy. I still miss her alot. Right now I work for Harold doing shipping and receiving but this is probably the last year for that. I live in Pomona and I'm listed, although not home much.LOL Henry passed away in 2008 heart attack. Louise lives in Kennewick, Washington. Harold and Sue in Chino Hills. Well now you know .LOL
