Corey's Story
Gee, has it really been 17 years since graduation? I hope everyone from the class of 91 is doing well. Fresh out of high school, I took to studying music full time and played lead guitar in a couple local bands around the New Port Richey area. But, before long I found myself back in the classroom at PHCC during the day and burning the candle at the other end at night staying out until dawn with friends. coffee houses, the beach, the haunting scent of night blooming jazzmin, and sleeping in late when I could get away with it left behind a blur of entangled memories. But, I'd give anything to relive those moments again.
As my eyesight got worse, I decided to attend the guide dog school in Braidington Florida in 93, where I received training with my first guide dog Tiger. It is then that i learned how little attention sighted people pay to the big red "Do not pet me" signs on the dog harness. And how dogs have bad days like humans do, such as the time Tiger decided to take a dump in the library at school. It's little things like that that help you to build lots of character and appreciate what parents go through. Needless to say, having a guide dog is a very humbling experience.
In 97 I received my Associates and immediately took off for the Atlanta area. I spent nearly a year at the Center for the Visually Impaired (CVI) in down town Atlanta through Fall of 98. Where I received a lot of additional training in how to u...Expand for more
se a computer with screen reader technology and how to make my way around the Atlanta MARTA system. In 99, I was accepted to Georgia State University, where I continued my education in mathematics. And in 2000, I retired Tiger from guide dog work due to complications with her thyroid. That summer I went back to Braidington Florida and trained with my second guide dog (namely, a half lab half bull dog named Precious).
The amazing thing about a new guide dog is that they are perfect angels at the guide dog school. But, when you get them home, they go out of their way to test you to your very limit. They warn you of this before you leave the school, but you are never ready for how far a working dog can push the envelope. Remember the movie Gremlins? Fortunately, this phase usually doesn't go on for more than a month or two and then it is down to business. And so, Precious accompanied me to school through the remainder of my time at GSU. Since graduating in 05, I've worked part time for a company in Artificial Intelligence research and helped to teach Precalculus to high school students. 08 is another year of change for me. I'm looking forward to starting my own business soon and getting back into music more heavily. I've become somewhat of a collector of guitars and hope to eventually get around to releasing my first CD in the not so distant future.
Look me up on myspace.
