Craig's Story

Life So far, it's been better than I ever could have hoped. Married since 1974 to Judith(originally from Panama). We have three terrific kids together, Kate, Craig II and Kristen. Kate was married in June 2009 to a fine young man and now lives in Canyon Lake, CA. Craig graduated in May 2008 from the USC School of Cinema and is now paying dues, trying to break into the business. Kristen is a senior at UCI, majoring in Social Ecology (interest in psychology). We live in Orange County, CA. I married my high school sweetheart not long after high school, but that didn't work out. However, we had a beautiful daughter, Erika, who is happily married and is living now with her own two super kids in Arlington, VA. Who ever would have expected it would turn out so well! School We sure had some great times! After attending El Cajon Valley HS in 1961-1963, and Pasadena HS in 1963-64, I was only at El Cap my senior year, 1964-65, so missed the write-up in the yearbook; don't bother to look unless you have the supplement they sent out later. But it was a busy year, with French Horn in Benton Minor's concert band and orchestra, tuba in marching band, Bel Canto choir, singing in Mr. Roberts' Kiss Me Kate, English with the fabulous Mrs. Ledbetter, Physics with Mr. Pendleton, Key Club and all that other good stuff. I am still in touch frequently with Steve Graff (also from Key Club), who lives nearby in Orange County, CA. College I went into UCLA in 1965 as a music major and came out in 1971 as a Russian major. Hey- things change! UCLA was my only choice. As I recall, it cost $25 to apply, and that was a lot of money then! The dorms were full, but I ran across Steve Davis from El Cajon high school, who recruited me into Theta Delta Chi fraternity. The house was affordable and great- with several musicians from the Grossmont Union School District, including Ted Bietz, who went on to graduate in music and taught in the District. In my junior year, I became friends with Peter Hodgson, the brand-new assistant professor o...Expand for more
f Russian from Yale. Although I never became really fluent in Russian, I finally got through Anna Karenina with the help of my trusty dictionary! Through the Russian Department, I met one of my favorite characters of all time- David Ginsburg. David is probably the smartest person I've ever known fairly well, a collector of facts and a polymath. He graduated with very high honors, and was recruited to study with Noam Chomsky at MIT. As I understand it, his girlfriend didn't like the weather in Massachusetts, so they came back to California. David went to law school and edited the law review. Wow! Prof. Hodgson and his family lived in Venice, CA. When John Becker and I finally got tired of the constant turmoil in the frat house, Peter helped us find an apartment in Venice, so that's where I lived through the end of school. What a wild place that was during the late '60s! Throughout my college years, I played French Horn in the Wind Ensemble and tuba in the marching band. Clarance Sawhill was the director of the Wind Ensemble, and Kelly James ran the football and varsity bands. David Angus from El Capitan was a year behind me, but he went on to glory as a Horn player in the east, with a PhD from the Eastman School of Music. Marty Reed (originally from Grant High School) was first horn in the Wind Ensemble- what a great, lyrical sound! Gary Beban led UCLA when they beat Michigan State in the Rose Bowl. And Lew Alcindor and Lucius Allen's freshman basketball team knocked off the reigning NCAA men's champs from the previous year. I mean, why would you go anywhere else? Workplace I have sold advertising space for McGraw-Hill, Forbes Magazine, Investors Business Daily, Inc. Magazine, California Business Magazine, Senior Highlights, Off Duty Magazine, and, for the past 15 years, the James G. Elliott Company. The Elliott Company is a magazine representative firm, and I am currently selling advertising on behalf of DRG's five craft magazines, CardMaker, Creative Knitting, Crochet, Crochet World, and Quilter's World.
