Craig's Story
Life
Currently live in Long Beach, CA with my partner of 11 years, Joel. We have a cat named Scout. I teach in Lakewood, CA for Long Beach Unified at Monroe K-8 School. I teach 4th and 5th grade Special Ed. It is a long story how I switched from ag. business to education, but I will explain it in the "workplace" category. We enjoy restoring our 1922 bungalow, antique furniture and pottery collecting, hiking, backpacking, kayaking, biking, desert exploring and visiting with friends and neighbors. My partner Joel is originally from Indiana. He went to Ball State and moved to Southern California in 1986 to work in aerospace. We met in 1994 when I moved to Southern California to work for Sunkist Growers, Inc. We moved in together and bought a house in 1996 in the Belmont Heights area of Long Beach.
School
I was truely a diehard Aggy in high school. It is amazing I ended up in Southern California as a teacher. I had one class from Beryl Allison in high school - a math class my freshman year. He and my family have become very close over the years after deaths in our families. Everytime we (Joel and I) go up to Exeter to visit Mom, we stay with Beryl. He is...Expand for more
truely the kindest man I know.
The stupidest thing I did in high school? Rolling my mom's Cordoba down Rocky Hill with sophmores, Leighann Nickel and Jennifer Young in the car.
Workplace
After Fresno State I wanted to export citrus to Japan, so I thought the best way to do that was live there. Three days after graduation (1989), I moved to Hokkaido, Japan. I worked as a farm trainee on two different farms for 1 1/2 years. I learned a lot about Japanese culture and Language. I wasn't ready to come home, so I started teaching English in the same community. I taught for 3 1/2 years. After my dad passed away I thought it was time to start my career in California. In 1994, 3 months after the Northridge quake, I started working at Sunkist in Sherman Oaks. I met Joel in 1994, we bought a house in Long Beach in 1996 but the commute to Sherman Oaks was terrible. I switched jobs and began exporting cattle feed to Japan in Long Beach, but that company was very messed-up. Joel convinced me to go back to school and get my teaching credetial because I often talked about teaching in Japan. Now I teach special ed. in Long Beach Unified and my commute is 6 miles!
