Curtis's Story
Life
After becoming a "Bachelor Of Arts" at Hamilton College, I spent a terrible year in Chicago(U. Of) as guest of what turned out to be the CIA, learning I that I didn't want to be a permanent part of Academe and so I "graduated" to the position of senior bicycle messenger in San Francisco. After two years of this "The Man" wanted his "Student Loan Money" back so I joined up with "The Man" myself, but I was nice one! I toured Vegas and Hollywood with them for 4 years and then made it back to the Bay Area During the next 20 years, in my free time, I spent a lot of time underwater and developed a passion for Photography. Between 1981 and 1995 I worked off and on as a professional photographer shooter doing mostly magazine work but also a bit of advertising and product photography and the occasional wedding. My moment(s) of fame came in 1985 when I was on the cover of Popular Photography and was also the featured story, and in 1987 when I shot a 6 color spread for Playboy and got my own photo in the magazine to boot! Did I mention all of this photography was underwat...Expand for more
er? Even the wedding? But I hated the business end of commercial photography and was burnt out anyway. I finally got a free pass from "The Man" and for the next five years became involved in property management in Sonoma County CA, teaching SCUBA on the side and also engaging in marine environmental work and some extremely dangerous cave and deep mixed gas diving. I cashed out completely before the (coming!) real estate crash and feeling unwelcome in the U.S.A. have decamped and now spend most of my time in South India where I divide my time between Auroville and Mamallapuram in Tamilnadu. In Tamilnadu I spend my personal time (and money!) working on a community development project I co-sponsor, working primarily with poor Untouchable women and children in rural villages in Northern Tamilnadu India providing vocational and primary educational assistance, constructing Community Centers in the process. There is a lot more I can say about what I am doing today but not enough space. Please leave me a note if you want to find out more, or just to say hello! Curt Degler
