Curtis's Story
My wife and I lived in Denver, Colorado until August, 2020. My son still lives in Lakewood, Colorado and my daughter lives in Southern California. She is an elementary school teacher and part time comedian. (Daddy’s princess)
Hopefully many of you will understand that… I couldn’t or wanted to no longer walk on ice and shovel snow. So we retired from Jefferson County Public Schools and moved to a retirement community located 3 miles from Sea World in San Antonio, Texas.
I am learning the native language here (Texan). They love Coloradans and not Californians so I am accepted in their culture.
The Mexican restaurants are Tex-Mex which means the salsa is “gravy” and the tacos are “puffy”. I miss Colorado and remain a very loyal Broncos fan no matter how bad they are.
Like many of you I celebrated my 65th birthday in September. I’m enjoying the benefits of Medicare, Social Security, and my Pension…well…maybe I shou...Expand for more
ld say “living” on the benefits.
I am experiencing the sadness of losing my faithful companion for the past 16 years. She was a loving dog and always put up with my goofball behavior. She always new when it was bedtime and would stand in my bedroom doorway patiently waiting for me. Now the doorway is dark and empty. My wife and I are getting old and the thought of having another faithful companion is not a realistic possibility. I am sure many of you have felt the same way.
I remember my grandmother saying “maintain a stiff upper lip “… I am learning what that means as the hardships and painful experiences of life come and go. I was given a comforting poem called the “Rainbow Bridge” that I encourage anyone who has experienced the loss of their faithful companion to read.
Sorry if I sound like a “Debby Downer” I just want my classmates to know how my life has gone. I miss those times at South High and I miss you.
