More about Curtiss:"We live and work in the Flathead Valley in NW MT. I met my wife, Becky, and her son Cayden Olson here and started a family at 40. We now have three boys, Cayden (off to college, Havre, MT), Liam (3/30/09) and Luka (9/20/10) and three dogs, two malamutes and an Aussie mix, that make up our family. Becky's folks, Vicki and Keith Olson also reside locally, while my folks, Faye and Jim, still call Tri-Cities, WA home. I particularily love where we live due to the vast outdoor opportunities....where else can you snow ski and kayak in the same day?! Wonderful, four seasons and everything from hunting/fishing to sky-diving and rafting and all an hour's drive from the Canadian border and one of the best US National Parks, Glacier NP.
After growing up and graduating from Hanford High in Tri-Cities, WA and my Grandparents farm outside of Mabton, I moved to Yakima and attended school at Perry Tech. Inst. studying graphic arts and photography, which unfortunately soon after graduating, took a turn to the computer and digital age. After enjoying the Yakima Valley and working for one of the quintessential micro-breweries in the nation (Grant's Ales) for 4+ years, I packed up and headed to Portland, OR where my sister, Jennifer and her husband (and good friend of mine) Kirk Maddox were living. January 1996. Okay, everyone who was in the Pacific NW at that time remembers where they were during that rediculously wet winter. I moved a couple days after the turn of the year, in two trips from Y...Expand for more
akima to Portland, over Satus Pass and through the gorge in my Subaru XT coupe with all my money, two bikes on the back and belongings into a city that saw 30+ days of consistant rain, mud slides and sand-bagging on Front St! We three lived in a two bedroom apt., I got a job as a bike messenger downtown and did just that during the deluge of three months. Six bucks an hour was barely enough to meet the guys after a sopping day of learning the city core for a brew or two. I remember my sister and I rolling my last coins before I got my first paycheck. It didn't kill me, and by the time I left Portland, 5 yrs. later, I had about five years in at Costco in the suburb of Aloha, no car, and was in the best shape of my life at 31. I biked everywhere! Ten miles to work, ten miles home, biked to parties, to McMenamins, to my dentist, to get groceries, you name it! Me and my Jandd Hurricane bike bag (still makes a great diaper bag!).
Over the years from days in Yakima doing the Pacific Crest Tr. through WA (approx. 30 days) with buddy Craig Giffen and the Wonderland Tr. (9 days) around Mt. Rainier w/buddy Matt Lover, I was really bitten with the outdoor bug. Always a skier, biker, hiker and camper, whether stumbling around the SW deserts staring at lizards or putting in the nautical miles off the coast of Vancouver Is., BC, it seemed to turn into a livelyhood and direction for me. Soon good friend and roommate for years in P-town, Tracy Aue and I entered Glacier NP for a five nighter starting at Lk. Kintla up by the 49th parallel to Brown's Pass and out through Bowman Lk. Nothing more tense than a windy night in grizzly country!
This is where I wanted to live. Although I cherish my years in Portland, Yakima and Tri-Cities, I feel I belong here. Now here I am, and although about 43 yrs. old, I have what most men seek, a wonderful family, dogs and a pick-me-up truck! Thanks to all my friends and family along the way, peace!".
