Cybelle's Story
Well, my life is out of the ordinary, but I think everyone expected that!
In the early 1990s, I was in a hurry to get out of Washington State, so I bought a $3000. house in Kansas City from a woman I met through the Simian Society (you may remember we had a monkey sanctuary) and completed a BA in French and Classical Studies at UMKC.
For most part, I use the KC house for storage while I travel. I did my graduate work in Ireland and recieved a PhD in classical art/archaeology from Trinity College Dublin in 2004. Unable to escape the monkey business, I wrote my thesis on the iconography of primates in the ancient Mediterrean. (It's now being published by Archaeopress and should be out later this year).
I've worked for a number of museums in the UK, ...Expand for more
Ireland and the US, but my most recent job was lecturer in classics at the University of Malawi. It's a beautiful country but also one of the poorest. In the classics department, we had 450 students, three lecturers and no books other than the ones I brought. The university was usually unable to supply photocopies, and there was no electricity in the classrooms. Still, a worthwhile experience.
Over the past few months, I've decided on a temporary career change to TESL and just accepted a position in Russia. Starting September 2008, I'll be teaching business English at a British-owned school in Moscow. I studied Russian for a couple of years in college, but that was ages ago. Should be fun! If there are any interesting developmets, I'll keep you posted.
