Cyndi's Story
My time at EMPEHI created both good and bad memories... I just didn't fit in with any of the groups there (socialites, greasers, etc.) but I did have a few close friends and found my own place in the end. My favorite part of high school was Mr. Hurst and A Capella choir. Choir was the best...remember the Christmas caroling and singing the Fauré Requiem? I am also proud that I was a part of United Students. Race relations have improved since 1970, but we still have a ways to go.
My biggest adventure was a 6 week trip to Niger, West Africa in 1973 to visit a friend in the Peace Corp. Just south of the Sahara desert during the drought, it was a dry, dusty, hot, and inhospitable place, but the people were amazing. The poverty, sand, desolation, sand, fire ants, sand, scorpions, and the people's unstoppable hope is somethin...Expand for more
g I will never forget. Oh, did I mention the sand!
I have 1 son and 1 daughter, both college grads and doing pretty well. Both of my children and I are living in Illinois. My husband died in 2009, so my life has changed a bit since then. I also learned that a very dear friend and fellow 1970 grad, Albert Watson, died in 1995. How sad... he was way too young.
I work in a NW suburban high school as a Technology Assistant. My responsibilities include maintaining over 200 instructional Macintosh computers, laptops, and over 1200 Apple iPads, as well as assisting students and teachers in using the computers and other "modern technological marvels". I love working with the staff and watching the students mature over 4 years. It's interesting to see what has changed in high school and the students since we were at EMPEHI.
