Dick's Story
Life
I was born and raised in Olathe. Schools were: Washington, Santa Fe Trail & Olathe High. I never did any college. Just before Xmas of '73, I married Diane Osborn. The next year we had a little girl Brandy Maria, who died of SIDS just 8 1/2 months later. We were in Dallas at the time, while I was on assignment as an Army food inspector. My high point in Dallas was when I bought a 1966 Thunderbird--white w/ white seats & black interior! I had it for about 2 years--lost it in the divorce. After our separation, Diane gave birth to our son Christopher Jason, who's 30 years old now. The last pics I saw of him were when he was 5. After several years in Texas, I came back HOME to Kansas. In '86 I met my present wife, Cassie, and have 2 children by her--a son, & a daughter who was born on the previous daughter's birthday. We have been married for 20 years, spending almost the whole 20 in Paola. Recently, we were able to move to Olathe, in fact into the very house I grew up in. My father died when I was a sophmore, and my mother passed away 2 years ago. As I was going through old pics, I found one I hadn't seen in forever: the last day of Kindergarten--it showed me and my 3 neighbors: Randy Cooper, Joanie Hagman and Dennis Davis!!! I'm really big on thinking about the past and "the good, old days" A big highlight of my life the past few years has been our visits to Planet Comicon, where we have met and gotten autographs from: Mark Goddard (Major West of "Lost In Space"), Julie Newmar ("Batman" Catwoman), Lou Ferrigno (the Hulk), Yvonne Craig ("Batman" Batgirl) and Adam West ("Batman" Batman). My son and I even got our photo taken in the TV Batmobile! Never thought I'd see 51 years!! I don't have any future plans--just try to wake up alive each day....
School
I started kindergarten at Washington School in 1960, and hated it; the rest of school was fun. My 1st real crush was Susie Triplett in 2nd grade. We guys used to follow her and Joanie Hagman to Susie's drop-off point. I'll never forget the goblet she twisted out of a gum wrapper and gave to me on the ride home from Paola! In 5th grade I liked my neighbor Sue Armstrong. Her brother hated that I invited Sue to our camp-out. About then I met my lifelong friend-Steve Ayers. We were a pair! We went to the Trail about 90 bezillion times. Connie Pryor was my crush in 6th grade. Who didn't like her!! Santa Fe Trail Jr. High was a real trip---design-wise. My favorite class of those 3 years was science, with arts & crafts a close 2nd. My jr. high crushes were Brenda Tidd, ...Expand for more
Suzy Hendrix, Jan Tibbetts, Robin Elaine Case, Lenore Pemberton, and Barbara Surprise. My favorite teachers were Mike Whittier, Texana Ollenberger, Mike Reilly, and Gary Pippin. The 9th grade caroling in Custer's farm truck w/ eggsalad sandwiches and hot coco afterwards was a definite highlight. High School was cool. Crushes there were Julie Harned, Mary Argo, Diane Hudson, Trisha Kreibel and Terri Wollen--no girlfriends:( My favorite teacher was Walter Carter, my German teacher, although I do have a special place in my heart for Mr. D. When he passes away, I think that will be Olathe's biggest funeral ever; so many have admired him over the decades. I've never done any collge whatsoever--just the food inspection school when I finished Army basic training. I still love to read (a blessing from my mom) and once in a while I learn something new.
Military
I joined the Army in Feb., 1974. I took my basic training at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. I was promoted to Private (E-2) at the end of basic. Most of our company's Drill Sergeants had attitude problems, but my senior DI--SSG Daniel Edwards--was very professional & top-notch. he had served in 1st Cavalry in Viet Nam. I went to Ft. Sheridan, Illinois for food inspection school. this lasted 2 months. The top 10% were promoted; I made it only because Randy Barger got caught sneeking onto base w/out his ID. So I left there as a PFC After 2 weeks leave, I was assigned to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. I was there from July, '74-Nov., '74, when I was transferred to Dallas, Texas. The Army inspected at a beef plant, a ham plant (I worked in both), and a veal plant. We also had another beef plant that was simply the kill floor and initial inspection-no processing of meat cuts. The highlight there was the basement room where the cow heads-stripped of hide and muscle-were hanging up--with the eyes still looking around!!!!!!! Moooooo!! Dallas was WAY different than Olathe--abominable slums, porno shops and "modelling" studios, pimps & ho's everywhere, and riff-raff at night. During my assignment at Dallas, I was promoted to Specialist 4th class (E-4). I had a 3-year enlistment, and I was glad to see it end because our lower-grade officers were pretty much idiots. We even had a scandal among the ranks that involved FBI investigations. Addendum: it's nearly 2010 and I'm a delivery driver for Jimmy John's-the world's fastest sandwiches. Been there for almost 3 years. Jonathan is 22, and Hannah is 14. she has a bad case of scoloiosis; her spine has a 65 degree curvature that requires surgery.
