Dale's Story

Life At forty-something I have a lot of life to talk about and not enough space to do a good job so I'll just touch the high points and summarize where I am now. I was a military brat so we moved around a lot. Before moving to Helena, I had lived in Fairbanks, Alaska, Langley AFB, Virginia, Spokane, Washington, and Bozeman, Montana. When I was 14 we moved to Helena, my dad died and I started at Helena High as a freshman -- all within a month. It was not a good start and didn't improve dramatically until I dropped out in my Junior year and joined the army. I joined up a few days prior to my 18th birthday. I studied and got my GED and served as an Avionic Mechanic for a few years before shifting into Military Intelligence. I served overseas three times (once in Berlin and twice with a small army detachment on RAF Edzell in Scotland). During my time in the army I saw the "liberation" of Grenada, the police action in Panama, the end of Communism in Europe and the first Gulf War. I made many friends along the way -- though I lost a few too! I'm married to a wonderful Scottish girl and we have 2 fantastic kids. I studied for and earned an Associates Degree in Computing. And in 1993 we bought the house we still live in today. In 1996 I left the army when the army made it clear I had to make a decision: career or family. No brainer! I chose family and have never looked back. We settled in Scotland, near where my wife's family farms, and I have made Scotland my home ever since. We'll probably stay here until we retire, when we'd lik...Expand for more
e to move back to the States... probably somewhere warm like Texas. Meanwhile, I'm in the home stretch of my training to become a minister and my wife teaches kindergarten at the school she attended as a child. It's right across the road from where we got married, where our kids were christened and where I occasionally preach. I often think about Helena High but I can't say I was happy there. I was the new kid in town; adrift without my Dad. But there were still a few bright points. I had two real friends who stood beside me whatever and helped to bring me to Jesus: Don Rock and Jasen Kellogg. Though I haven't heard from either of them in over 27 years they are often in my thoughts and prayers. I suppose one of the reasons I hooked up with Classmates.com was that I would really like to reconnect with them. All in all, I think I've done not too badly. I serve God daily and I served my country with honor and distinction. My wife and I have brought up two wonderful people who are busy trying to attain their full of potential and we all continue to try, in our own small way, to make the world a better place. I only hope, when my time has come, that people can say without irony that my passing has left a difficult gap to fill, that I will be missed and that my feet have left a lasting imprint on the sands of our existence together. If I've struck a chord with you, awoken a memory you'd like to share, or captured your interest please get in touch. I'd love to hear from you. In the words of Ian Punnett: Deus te amat - and I do too!
