Dale's Story
Life
Come and see us when in Houston TX. We were in the Phone book when they had one still. Drop us a line. We have 2 kids & 5 grandkids. We're just 55 min. from the Gulf. 5 min. from Hobby Airport. If you've never played in the Gulf waters you'll be surprised. I got employed ASAP after Highschool and became a Railroad Brakeman for the Southern Pacific. Got drafted late 1965 and became US Army air traffic controller at Ft.Belvoir VA. 10 mi. South of the Pentagon. They were short handed because of Pres Johnson's Vietnam thrust following the Kennedy assassination. I even extended my service a little because of it. I had developed a serious ulcer in that job and just went back to my previous job after active Army separation. Then a couple years later, our first child was a year old and the long hours and days away from home were not working out. I moved into their Tellecom. dept. and am now a retired IT electronic tech from Union Pacific RR. We have lived in the same house for 50 years. I enjoy God, and the things of God. Nature always interests me. Both of our children with their families are about 30 min. away. The grand kids win my heart. Been married for about 52 years to Cathy (Kirk) of Concord CA, Yagnacio Valley class of 64. Our old songs always catch my attention, don't they yours?
School
My formal schooling started out at Oak View Elementary in San Joquin County CA. North East of Lodi. We were dairy farmers east of Galt off Kennifick Rd. When dad could no longer work his full time job in town at Super Mold as a die caster, and milk 20 cows twice a day, they sold out and we moved into Lodi. I started the fifth grade in Needham. The basic idea behind school evaded me for some time. I immediately let my parents know of the total depravity and brazen dishonesty behind Mrs. Beaver's intent to have me do school work at home. I learned to tell time that year at 10 years old. I got Rheumatic Fever in the summer before eighth grade and excelled that following year under the careful tutoring of a lady, whose name I don't remember. I had total fear of starting Lodi High School. Thank God we moved to Concord CA. and got a fresh start. I graduated from Mt. Diablo High by the skin of my teeth, as I never could seem to get real grip on school work,,, at home.
College
I followed the electronic training all four years in Mt. Diablo H.S. and in Diablo Valley...Expand for more
Jr College and took one semester of liberal arts college at Calif. Baptist Col. in Riverside CA. spring of 65.
Military
Boot camp at Ft Polk LA was traumatic. Way more serious than I was ready for. Was a proud draftee, very patriotic, but did not want to die for what I did not understand. Was assigned to DUSAA right out of boot camp. They sent me TDY to the Air Force "Air Traffic Control School" in Biloxi MS. I volunteered for an extended service time obligation. It is funny, but the time was so very short, yet seemed so very long. I could talk on and on of all the events. I did not see it as entertainment then, but over the years has given me much joy of recollection. My son served as an Army Signalman in the nineteen eighty's, mostly in Germany. He has made me proud as well.
Workplace
My first Job was selling ice cream from a Cushmann three wheel scooter for Jery's Frozen Treats. Was a stock boy for Beede's Variety Store in downtown Concord CA. My girlfriend's dad got me a job as a brakeman for the Southern Pacific Railroad. We married in early December of 1965 right after I finished Army boot camp. Our first child was born Feb 29 of 1968. A year and a half later I moved into our railroad telle-communications as a pole lineman. Following this I was able to get in on several analog microwave and multiplex training schools.
I became the foremost microwave radio tech in the area. And in retirement, used to get calls for help on obsolete equipment repair. I was also a favored person to do radio tower work, as I always enjoyed the challenge. My last tower work was in 1998.
In 1975 we started building the Sprint telecom network. I had charge of the analog hub at Satsuma Station near Houston TX for the first 5 years of the Sprint system. But now it has grown to become a major light wave terminal for Sprint.
I retired from RR service in 2005 with over 40 years. We used to pull a lot of practical pranks and to this day I lack a sense of personal safety forethought. One person, Bob Miner, who I took as a person i needed to prank, and on whom I fulfilled my obligation more than once, Bob gets my deepest admiration for not having me fired. Today that would be an automatic termination, but then we were hard on people for no reason at all and he stands above the rest in my admiration. I also stood for the men as their local union growler from 1970 to 1990.
