Dan's Story

School I started school at St. Matthew's School, and went there from K to 3rd grade. I can still remember a lot of the kids I went to school with--Dan Peterson, Bruce Braun, Frankie Valenti, Alan Wittenberg, Donna Kunkel, Jill Shoemaker, Joan Klaussen, and are some from my grade. I could name more if I had a picture in front of me. I also remember Ken Haslich and Brian Gatzo and their battles. I also remember most of the teachers--Mr. & Mrs. Gilbert, Mr & Mrs. Benidt, Mrs. Becker, and Mr. Timmerman. And, the custodian and bus driver, Mr. Leisteko (sp?) and sometimes driver, Pastor Halboth! I remember good times with Dick, Jane, Sally & friends; coloring lots of mimeographed sheets (remember how GOOD they smelled!!); chapel on Wed. mornings; Mr. Gilbert's spaghetti; kickball after lunch! We moved to Wauwatosa at the start of 4th grade and I went to Underwood School. Miss Maas was my teacher. Studied a lot of WI history that year, and I think we also studied the jungle cultures--I remember making a jungle drum and putting on some sort of thing in the gym. Best friends were Steve Kovach and Dale Schauer. Some others I remember are Jim Monville, Bob Stupar, Jim Bonosho, Mike Paschke and Steve Grafton. Amazing--I can't remember any of the GIRLS! But I know there were some that always played "Man from U.N.C.L.E." with us. Spent 5th grade at Underwood. My teacher was Mrs. Johnson. Some of the kids I remember from that class are Rory Darling, Wendy Hildeman, Steve Dalton (he was SO good at flash cards and finding state capitals, EVERYONE wanted to beat him). I loved the math and the art. Moved to Dent, MN, during the summer before 6th grade--went to Dent Elementary. My teacher was Mrs. Harthun. Had 7th, 6th and 5th grades in the same room. I remember making Minnesota scrapbooks. Ken Femling had the biggest one ever made in the state, I'm sure! Lon Stoll was in 7th grade, and he and I got to go on to the Ottertail County spelling contest because we won the school's contest. I remember my best friend, Mike Hertel (and his mom and dad--I spent a lot of time at their house and exploring the world with Mike), Tim and Greg Stoll, Paul Spitzer, Ray Betterman, Jim Waldorf, (dang, was I just not INTERSTED in girls that I don't remember ANY of their names at the moment???) I do remember Maxine Magers. We all were mean to her, and I for one, at least, am sorry Maxine wherever you are now. I hope you became rich, successful and happy beyond any of our imaginations. You certainly didn't deserve the way your peers treated you. I went the first half of my 7th grade at Perham. Took a ride on one of Mr. Jake Wolford's buses from Dent to Perham sometimes. Rode with my dad the days he was teaching at Perham (he subbed sometimes). Hung out with a great bunch of guys--Hertel, Ron Huebsch, Roger Hayden, Bill Davis, (who was the guy from Texas who could make such fabulous drawings of cars??). I remember Linda Jacobson (gave me some great brownies as a going away present), Fred Sailor, Cheryl Trelstad, Linda Schoeneburger, Terry (can't remember his last name, but he had a twin sister)...if I can find some pictures, I can probably remember more. I remember the great times we had in Mrs. Winkler's English class. Mr. Braun-history, and Mr. Harmer-math. In the second half of t...Expand for more
hat year, moved to Riceville, IA. Had Mrs. Grace for Math, Mrs. Koschmeder for English and Art, Mr. Rasmussen for Science. In 8th grade, had Mrs. Behrends for English and Art, drawing a blank on the Iowa History teacher's name (Hattie Feather, per Chris Fox!!), Mr. Milewski for Typing (now known as "Keyboarding"), Mr. Markham was my basketball coach, and Mr. Rasmussen and Mr. Ripley were the track coaches. Fred Kesten was my best friend, but I also remember Jeff Lenz, Randy Groth, Paul Jenssen, "Big" Rodney, Gene Buhr, Diane Adams, Ronnie Ouhlman, Gretchen Grupp, Russ Roske, my neighbors Sharon and Lynette Maus, and more! I moved from Riceville after 8th grade to Spring Valley, MN, where I attended 9th - 12th grade. College I achieved my degree attending Winona State University through night classes in Rochester, MN. Although I didn't have an "on campus" experience, I think I had a very "applied" education, and one that I was able to bring my working experience to bear on, too. Had some great experiences and professors, though! Loved Mr. Mackenzie's commercial art classes that were held at RCC! Mr. Schneider's Intermediate Accounting classes were good, and they also convinced me that I really DID NOT want to become an accountant! I only touched the WSU campus two or three times for makeup exams or for a session with my counselor. Otherwise, I was able to achieve everything at the WSU facilities in Rochester. Workplace My first "real" job was in the Proof-Transit/Data Center at First National Bank of Minneapolis. When I graduated from business school, I started collecting student loans. After a year or so of that, I was a banking services representative for First Chicago Data Corp, in Bloomington, MN. I provided support to banks around the Twin Cities area for FCDC's automated banking services (cool job!!!) I then was hired by IBM in Rochester, MN, in their Finance area. After an assignment as a user system analyst on a financial application, I became the support programmer for that same application. I then moved to Boca Raton, Florida, where IBM was ramping up the personal computer business, and I was an application programmer/architect on marketing and distribution applications. I moved back to Rochester, MN, and worked as a project manager in the development laboratory. I accepted my first management assignment in areas that supported the involvement of business partners in advanced application technologies and early releases of OS/400. I spent two years in the United Kingdom as early products rep for Europe. I then came back to Rochester and worked on the development and deployment of business partner communications. I left IBM in 1997 to pursue my own small business consulting business and had a great time working with small businesses in the Spring Valley area as well as working as a volunteer on various community projects, including a capital project to build a new community library. I also helped start and operate KING 11, Spring Valley Community Television, and was one of its first news anchors...until we ran out of news. We had a great time providing services to the school system, the city government, covering sporting events (including the Minnesota State High School football tournament at the Metrodome), veterans events, and much, much more.
