Dan's Story

I currently live in Green Bay, WI. neodan1979atgmaildotcom Throughout my life I have lived in many places... It all started when I was born in Green Bay, WI on June 14th 1979 and resided at 125 S. Quincy St. I lived there til 1986 when Catholic Central shut down and we moved closer to St. Mary's of the Angels where I spent a few months attending before being required by the catholic school system to attend special education classes, of which they did not provide at the time. I spent the remainder of my 2nd grade at JFK Elementary. Then I lived at 926 S. Jackson St. til 1991 when my parents could no longer afford to live there. While I lived there I attended Langlade Elementary for 3rd - 5th grade. Since my parents rented out 125 S. Quincy instead of selling it, we moved back to it. It was there where I lived while attending Washington Middle School for 6th - 8th grade. I lived there til my dad retired from the Green Bay Fire Department after 23 years of service. My parents were then free to move out of the Green Bay city limits and we moved to 4320 Geano Beach Rd. in Abrams,WI. Everyday I would get on a bus and spend an hour picking up other students before finally reaching Oconto Falls High School. I lived there til 1997 when I left high school and got my H.S.E.D. at N.W.T.C. in Green Bay. I had lived in 4 apartments between 1997 and 2000 ... I resided at 2010 Vine St from October of 1997 until spring of 1998 with my brother until my brother moved out (due to too much fighting) I couldn't afford the rent and had to move to a cheaper apartment. I moved to 122 S. Van Buren St. in spring of 1998. Then sometime in 1998 moved to the west side of Green Bay at 311 Leeland St. Then sometime in 1999 I moved to 1177 E. Walnut St and then I moved back in with my parents who had moved back to Green Bay at 132 S. Van Buren St. In July of 2000, for some odd reason, I thought it would be "cool" to move out of my parent's house and into the homeless shelter. I spent the next 3 years in and out of my parent's house and the homeless shelter. In 2003 I moved in with my girlfriend at the time (both of us moved into 1001 Shea Ave. from being homeless). In March of 2004 we moved to 1009 Eastman Ave (which was torn down years later) until I got a job at Walmart in June of 2004. We then moved to 621 E. Walnut St, that is where I lived when we got married on July 16th, 2004. In June of 2005 I lost my job at Walmart and we were forced to move to a cheaper apartment. We moved to 1159 Day St which was a nightmare. The landlords we signed a lease with allowed cats, but they sold the house and the new landlord came over on Thanksgiving day and told us either we had to leave or the cats did (we had 2). So in December of 2005 we moved to 2677 Humboldt Rd, another nightmare. The management had a very strict code of conduct and appearan...Expand for more
ce (we had 6 2 liter bottles of rainbow colored water on the window sill and that "wasn't allowed"). In the summer of 2006 we moved to 909 Day St. where we lived happily until early spring of 2008 when we couldn't afford the electric bill. So we moved into an apartment that had all utilities included which was 306 Mather St, which was another nightmare. The landlord came over and claimed we were using the air conditioner too much. Then claimed we had more than the 2 of us living there and asked us to leave. Then I made the shortest move ever in my life in fall of 2008, I walked across the street to 301 Mather St where the homeless shelter was located. We lived there til spring of 2009 when we moved to 2120 Harold St. after I thought we had our finances straightened out. I was right until May of 2009 when again I couldn't afford the rent. My wife moved in with a friend and I moved back into the shelter. She then asked me for a divorce and on December 2nd 2009 we were divorced. On January 30th 2010 I quit smoking so I could move in with a girlfriend in Menasha, WI. That lasted about a week and I moved into the shelter in Appleton. I lived there until March of 2010 when I moved back to my parents house. In summer of 2010 my ex-wife was permitted to reside in the garage. I have no idea what inspired me to do so, but I joined her in the garage and even bought a queen sized air mattress to sleep on. When it got too cold outside we were asked to leave. She moved in with a friend and I went back to the shelter for the last time. In January of 2011 they installed a doorbell system that announced "There is a visitor at the North Entrance" or which entrance they were at, very loudly. After that I was being awoken out of sound sleep (and I'm a heavy sleeper) for a month. I decided I had had enough broken sleep and one snowy day decided to go help my friend Pat shovel out his driveway and deliberately broke shelter curfew so that I could not stay there any longer. I then moved into the warming shelter ran by St. John's and that is where I learned that I did not have to be recognized by the federal government as disabled in order to be eligible to live in a senior/disabled building. So I applied section 8 housing and for an apartment with R.E. Management who at the time was maintaining Port Plaza Towers. They had just moved everyone from Port Plaza Towers to two buildings (Woodland Park Apartments and Trail Creek Apartments) so there was a waiting list to get an apartment. So on May 1st I moved back in with my parents and just as I was about to go back to St. John's I got a call from R.E. Management to view the apartment building on November 1st. On November 7th, 2011 I was given keys to my apartment (221) at Trail Creek Apartments at 1900 Morrow St, fully moved in on the weekend of the 19th and have been living there ever since. :)
